Tomorrow, April 4th, 2025, you’ll find the “A Minecraft Movie” in theatres. This film brings the incredibly famous video game to life on the big screen. Some notable stars include Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Emma Myers. Critic reviews for this movie are already available.
The overall feedback is diverse; at present, the Metacritic score stands at 49, while the Rotten Tomatoes rating slightly increases to 56. Below are a variety of reviews from different sources, including the top-rated ones and some of the lowest.
Los Angeles Times – 8/10
Approximately half of the time, Black’s dialogue serves to describe what we see on-screen, ranging from diamond swords to airborne hot air balloons resembling gothic squids. However, it is the sparkle in his eyes and the enthusiasm in his speech that gives each line an electric charge.
Entertainment Weekly – Grade: B
Jared Hess, who collaborated on the creation of Napoleon Dynamite and several other quirky films, offers a unique viewpoint that transforms what might have become a cumbersome blockbuster based on an intellectual property (IP) into something more engaging.
IGN – 6/10
In a big-studio adaptation of a widely recognized video game, “A Minecraft Movie” showcases an unexpected flair from its director, Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite fame. Despite being entangled in the requirements of a CG-heavy fantasy adventure, he infuses moments of uproarious humor into his Overworld tale. The film conveys a familiar “the world is what you make it” message, but it’s Jack Black and Jason Momoa who bring this idea to life with infectious comic energy.
GamesRadar+ – 6/10
As a gamer, I can tell you that Jared Hess’s unique indie touch breathes life into a video game adaptation, with Jack Black’s unstoppable performance taking it to new heights. The special effects and female roles could use some polishing, but this movie still delivers an engaging fantasy journey that manages to make gold out of seemingly ordinary source material.
Paste Magazine – 4.5/10
A successful Minecraft Movie appeals to fans by knowing when to deliver what they want; it recognizes why viewers left their gaming devices behind for a theater experience, and delivers that experience with the accuracy of a diamond pickaxe.
The Hollywood Reporter – 3/10
It’s become typical for people to have low expectations for intellectual property projects from corporations, so it might not surprise many, whether they are devoted Minecraft enthusiasts or casual crafters, that a Minecraft Movie is lackluster. However, this should concern us because the kind of creativity and innovative thought that we value is dwindling with the rise of artificial intelligence.
Two years ago, when I assessed Barbie, I expressed worry about a time where all our humanist teachings would be provided by corporate toy manufacturers. Now, this fear seems more relevant than ever.
New York Post – 2.5/10
Mine all you like. You’ll never find any smarts in this cavern of stupidity.
