Royal Heartbreak: Prince Robert Reveals Prince Frederik’s Final Moments

Prince Frederik went into his final moments with intention.

Following the heartbreaking death of Luxembourg’s 22-year-old prince, who was battling PolG mitochondrial disease, on March 1st, his father, Prince Robert, revealed details about his final moments. Prince Robert, who is married to Princess Julie and has children including Frederik, 29-year-old Princess Charlotte, and 27-year-old Prince Alexandre, shared this information.

On that extraordinary day, February 28th, marked as ‘Rare Disease Day,’ I, deeply moved, was summoned into my cherished son’s sanctuary for what proved to be our final exchange. With an indomitable spirit and unwavering determination, Frederik bid his heartfelt farewell, expressing his love to each of us in turn. This poignant moment was immortalized in a heartfelt declaration penned by me and shared on the POLG Foundation’s website.

As the prince bid farewell to his immediate and extended family, I too found myself reflecting on my son’s final jest, a poignant reminder of his humor and spirit at the age of 56.

Having bid us all goodbyes, some heartfelt, some insightful, some guiding – typical of Frederik – he ended by sharing a cherished family joke among us. In his final act, even in the face of farewell, his humor and immense compassion found a way to bring laughter and lighten our spirits.” The prince, related to Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, added this sentiment.

In his own words, the Luxembourg royal shared some details about his last conversation with his son. He recounted that just before his son made other statements, he asked, “Father, am I someone you can be proud of?

And the prince emphasized just how proud he indeed was of his son prior to his passing.

Robert clarified that the solution was straightforward, yet despite its familiarity, he required confirmation that he had given his utmost during his brief but meaningful life. He wanted to feel secure about moving forward now,” explained Robert. “Frederik is not just my superhero, but also for our entire family and countless good friends. His PolG Foundation has significantly helped many people globally as well.

At the age of 14, Frederik was identified as having POlG disease. His father characterized him as determined, cheerful, and filled with an unyielding zest for living, which enabled him to battle courageously till the very end.

Prince Robert shared a thoughtful suggestion penned by Frederik, stating that it’s a piece of advice worth following for their whole family to preserve Frederik’s essence. The message on Frederik’s phone simply said, “Step outdoors when the day is bright with sunlight.
