Rumored remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion reportedly features improved combat and more

Rumors are heating up surrounding a highly-anticipated but still unannounced remake.

A report from MP1st hints at a potential overhaul of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake, promising enhancements to gameplay and combat mechanics. An ex-employee from Virtuos is said to have leaked information about the project, suggesting modifications to the Stamina, Stealth, Archery, and Blocking systems for a more seamless experience. The insider reveals that the underlying calculations of these systems are being revised to minimize frustration.

It’s said that the upcoming remake is being crafted utilizing the Unreal Engine 5, and it’s intended to enhance the user interface (HUD) for clearer presentation of data.

Since 2023, there have been whispers about this remake, sparked by a Reddit post from what appeared to be a former Virtuos employee who claimed the company was collaborating on the project along with a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3. The fire of speculation grew even hotter when an old Bethesda Softworks roadmap leaked during the Microsoft vs. FTC hearings. This roadmap hinted at remastered versions of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Fallout 3, two classic titles developed by Bethesda Game Studios.

Back in 2006, the action RPG “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion” debuted on Xbox 360 and Windows PC, followed by a PlayStation 3 version in 2007. This game was highly praised, receiving many accolades and selling more than 3.5 million units by November 2011.

An Oblivion remake would join a stacked year of Xbox titles

According to MP1st’s report, it appears that the rumored Oblivion remake will not be showcased during the upcoming Xbox Developer_Direct event on January 23. Instead, this event is expected to offer a closer inspection of various upcoming first and third-party games for Xbox, including an unnamed game that has yet to be revealed.

If The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake is launched in 2025, it will be among a multitude of games from various Xbox first-party studios. This includes Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight, Playground Games’ Fable, and id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages.

If it indeed proves authentic (and the evidence strongly suggests so), I can’t wait to explore just how much this reboot deviates from the original, yet manages to retain the iconic feel of Oblivion. I’m also intrigued by the choice of Unreal Engine 5 and what that might mean for the game’s modding community, considering Bethesda’s history of favoring a user-friendly custom technology suite.

I eagerly anticipate not having a lengthy wait to learn more about this project. The insights gleaned here are likely to influence the work on the unannounced Fallout 3 remake as well. However, considering Bethesda’s roadmap, it seems we might have a while longer before the Fallout 3 title becomes available.

The reboot is expected to debut simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with potential releases on PlayStation 5, as well as the yet-to-be-revealed Nintendo Switch 2. Just like other Xbox exclusive titles, it will likely be accessible on day one for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers.
