Rumour: Bungie Targeting a Top Five 2025 Title with Marathon

Based on reports from a reliable source close to Bungie, Sony holds high hopes for Marathon’s performance.

In the video, he mentioned that for the upcoming extract-based shooter to be considered successful or achieve success, it must rank among the top five best-selling games of the year according to NPD.

It’s likely that Tassi is discussing Circana (previously named NPD), a platform that evaluates the highest-grossing games in the United States using sales data from both physical and digital sources. In the year 2024, according to their rankings based on revenue, the top five best-selling games were Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, EA Sports College Football 25, Helldivers 2, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, and NBA 2K25.

It’s clear that several very big titles are on that roster, but Helldivers 2 demonstrated that Sony can achieve breakthrough success with live-service games. Unfortunately, Marathon isn’t generating nearly as much excitement at the moment.

One potential advantage of the extraction shooter is that it will be simultaneously released on PS5, Xbox, and PC platforms. However, concerns have been raised about its $40 price tag, leaving some uncertainty as to how many players will choose to purchase the game when it launches in September.

There’s uncertainty about whether the launch will happen at all due to the studio being required to reevaluate all their artwork assets. This is because they were found to have unauthorizedly used decals from another artist without permission. As reported by Tassi, the developers’ morale has significantly dropped.

It appears rather improbable that Marathon will achieve the level of success Tassi mentions in this context, given that approximately 34% of Push Square readers have stated they would require payment to play the game. It seems challenging times may lie ahead.
