According to recent reports, Sony is planning to release an entirely new God of War game for PS5 this year, featuring Kratos’ return to Greece. As the 20th anniversary of the franchise (March 22nd) passes with only God of War Ragnarok armor, skins, a tribute video, and merchandise, speculation around the series has been heightened by Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb.
Through a sequence of posts on Bluesky, he mentions that this year will see the release of a new project based on the Greek God of War, but it’s not a remastered collection; instead, it’s a standalone side story. When asked about its scale in comparison to the main series, Grubb advises to have more modest expectations, implying that it might be around the same size as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Over the weekend, it was speculated that Grubb might have hinted at a potential remastered set of the initial God of War games, considering it’s close to the series’ 20th anniversary. However, Grubb has recently clarified that he never received any information about a remaster collection.
Instead, he contacted someone regarding the whispers surrounding the collection, and they informed him that no God of War announcements would be made during the State of Play event. However, they hinted that something related might surface on the anniversary.
The recent assertions align with earlier speculations by Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, who hinted at a potential game focusing on a younger Kratos. Notably, this supposed project seems distinct from the one recently scrapped by Sony, which was under development by Bluepoint Games and centered around a live-service adaptation of Demon’s Souls.
