Rumours of a Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 Version Swirl Again

One surprising aspect of the PlayStation 5 era thus far is that Red Dead Redemption 2 hasn’t received a current-gen update yet. While it can be played on PS5 through backward compatibility, its frame rate is limited to 30 frames per second and the resolution is lower compared to what’s offered on Xbox Series X|S.

For several years now, there have been whispers about Rockstar potentially developing a Red Dead Redemption 2 version for PlayStation 5, but this project was put aside as they focused on creating Grand Theft Auto 6 instead. In 2022, it was reported by a reliable source within Rockstar, Tez2, that the company had abandoned plans to remaster the original game and its sequel for contemporary gaming systems.

Indeed, there was a fresh take on Red Dead Redemption in 2023, but that version was primarily designed for PlayStation 4. Instead of a full-fledged remaster or even an upgrade for PS5, it was more like a straightforward port. The resolution was enhanced, but the frame rate stayed at 30 frames per second.

Currently, there are whispers suggesting that Rockstar Games might be working on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2, along with updates for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S to optimize the open-world game for contemporary hardware. These claims originate from individuals close to Rockstar who have spoken to gaming outlets Game Reactor and Nintenduo.

It’s been hinted that the Switch 2 might launch this year, but specifics about its release date in relation to updates for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are unclear. This speculation follows rumors that Rockstar could be bringing GTA 4 to new platforms as well. If these reports are accurate, it would mean that the developer has resumed work on the PS5 version, despite previously delaying GTA 6 until May 2026.

One potential scenario is that Video Games Deluxe has been tapped to work on the task at hand, following its acquisition by Rockstar and its subsequent rebranding as Rockstar Australia. They’ve been enlisted to assist in rectifying issues with the recently released Grand Theft Auto Trilogy for PS5 and PS4, which faced some initial troubles upon launch.
