As a film enthusiast who has watched his fair share of political satires and absurd comedies, I must say that Guy Maddin’s “Rumours” is a unique blend of both genres. With its star-studded cast and outlandish plot twists, it offers a witty commentary on the international politics scene, albeit with a dash of surrealism that might leave some viewers scratching their heads.
It’s often considered doubtful that anything beneficial results from global gatherings like the G7, as the agreements reached are seldom kept and goals are rarely achieved. This pattern is mirrored in Guy Maddin’s film, which opens with a group photo of seven world leaders at the G7 summit. After this, they all depart for a gazebo in the chateau grounds to create a vague statement addressing an unspecified global crisis.
This production boasts an impressive ensemble, with Cate Blanchett portraying Hilda Orlmann, the German Chancellor. She’s accompanied by Denis Menochet as the French Prime Minister, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Takehiro Hira representing the British and Japanese delegates respectively. Italy’s Antonio Lamorle (played by Rolando Ravello) takes on his role, while Charles Dance brings the spirit of Americana to life as the U.S. President. truth be told, any talented actor could have filled this part, but that’s all part of the humor in Rumours.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but see echoes of reality in the unfolding drama on screen. The politicians, much like some we know, range from incompetence to sheer self-interest, making it all the more surreal as we navigate through a world filled with zombies, a luminous cranium, and an unexpected appearance by Alicia Vikander, delivering lines that sound like gibberish.
The movie “Rumours” is peculiar and frequently puzzling, taking jabs at global leaders – some of which land, some which don’t, but none that are hysterically funny. It might be more accurate to describe it as an elongated joke, involving an AI chatbot designed to catch pedophiles, which backfires. However, the film is excessively long and feels like an avant-garde stage production, albeit with a competent acting ensemble.
