Originally, the titans of American television news offered comfort and authoritative insight. Today, they validate their viewers’ wildest apprehensions. Earlier, channels focused on reporting elections; now they engage in them. The Slate’s Slow Burn series delves into the story of Rupert Murdoch’s masterful billionaire-turned-public-advocate maneuver, the creation of Fox News, a network with the power to influence elections. It took the world a while to grasp this reality. Even when employees referred to a candidate as “our man”, it wasn’t entirely clear what was happening. The defining moment came after the 2020 election when they had to choose between truth and ratings. Join us to learn how it unfolded. DAVID HEPWORTH

Run with the Fox

In his final adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novels, Sam Mendes, the executive producer, brings together an illustrious ensemble featuring Thandiwe Newton, Ambika Mod, Mark Strong, Miriam Margolyes, and Mackenzie Crook. The grime and mist of Victorian London serve as a striking contrast to the corruption within the judiciary, as the complex case of Jarndyce v Jarndyce unfolds, filled with a murder mystery, a hidden family secret, and a hint of a joyful resolution. This production, much like one would anticipate, is an auditory delight, ideal for those cozy autumn evenings. ANNA JONES

Parents vs the Internet

They say the internet is like the Wild West, but there are those out there who want to change that. Daily Mail writer Liz Hull fronts this socially conscious ten-episode podcast, examining the dangers that smartphones and web access can present to children. Joining her is Esther Ghey, whose daughter Brianna was murdered in a premeditated attack orchestrated through the internet. Can kids be prevented from using their phones in schools? A truly sobering podcast for any parent. JAMES MOTTRAM

Pager Protocol

It’s surprising that cyber warfare techniques can involve destroying enemy pagers, but it seems Israel recently demonstrated this tactic. What’s even more intriguing is the emergence of a mystery novel titled “Pager Protocol” that revolves around a significant delivery of pagers heading to Lebanon. The author and originator of the book remain unknown, which adds to the enigma. Additionally, the style of writing could potentially deter readers due to its awkwardness. SIMON O’HAGAN
