Rurouni Kenshin Announces Indefinite Hiatus Over Creator's Health

As a long-time fan of Rurouni Kenshin, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as we approach the return of the Kyoto Disturbance arc and yet face an uncertain future for the manga. The anime adaptation promises to be thrilling, with Kenshin facing off against Shishio and his band of warriors. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of this series that it can adapt its storylines to live-action as well, as evidenced by the successful Rurouni Kenshin films.

This month, “Rurouni Kenshin” is gearing up to reintroduce its anime comeback, featuring the character of former Battosai facing off against Shishio as part of the Kyoto Disturbance Arc. Meanwhile, the anime’s return is being planned, the manga has decided to temporarily halt production for an undetermined period. Publisher Shueisha revealed that the latest storyline, The Hokkaido Arc, will be going on hiatus due to the health problems of Nobuhiro Watsuki, leaving the future of Kenshin uncertain in the manga world.

The creator of Rurouni Kenshin, Nobuhiro Watsuki, has found himself in a contentious situation following charges of possessing child pornography by the Japanese government in 2018. However, this incident hasn’t halted the manga series, but in the most recent reboot, the voice actor of Kenshin, Howard Wand, has acknowledged the issue head-on. He stated, “I can’t ignore the elephant in the room: Yes, I am well aware of the author’s transgressions and I unequivocally condemn them. In light of this, a part of all my earnings from Kenshin will be donated to charity.

Shueisha’s Statement

Shueisha, the publisher behind “Rurouni Kenshin’s” manga and Weekly Shonen Jump, has announced a break in the series due to creator Nobuhiro Watsuki’s health concerns. They expressed their gratitude to readers for following “Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc” and explained that because of Watsuki’s poor physical condition, the series will temporarily pause. The comic has been on hiatus since the June 2024 issue of Jump Square, and they have been attempting to produce the next chapter each month. However, after consultations with Watsuki, it was decided that a period of rest would be beneficial for a steady and continuous resumption of the serialization.

Once we’ve decided when the break is over, we’ll make an announcement about it in Jump Square magazine and on the official Jump Square X account. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to those eagerly awaiting the next chapter of “Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc”. We appreciate your patience and ongoing support.

The Kyoto Disturbance Release Date

I can hardly contain my excitement as the second season of Rurouni Kenshin’s revival is just around the corner, set to premiere on October 4th! The Kyoto Disturbance promises to be an epic arc that could very well outshine all others in this rebooted series. As Kenshin prepares to face off against Shishio, a man who once held the title of Battosai like him, the villain has gathered an army of warriors to aid him in his mission to take over Japan. Thankfully, my trusted allies stand ready and determined to fight alongside me against this formidable foe.

Beyond the anime version, Rurouni Kenshin also managed to translate the Kyoto Disturbance into a live-action format. More precisely, “Rurouni Kenshin Part 2: Kyoto Inferno” and “Rurouni Kenshin Part 3: The Legend Ends” portrayed the arrival and conclusion of Shishio in the manga series. As of now, all five live-action films based on Rurouni Kenshin are streamable on Netflix, though it remains unclear if additional movies will be produced to follow the manga’s storylines.
