Rurouni Kenshin Season 3 Announced With First Look

At AnimeJapan 2025, Aniplex and Liden Films have officially confirmed that the revamped version of “Rurouni Kenshin” will be returning for a third season. As of now, no specific release date has been shared, and the preview video posted by Aniplex on YouTube predominantly serves to summarize the key events from the first two seasons. Given that Season 2 concentrated on the Kyoto Disturbance arc from the manga, it’s speculated (but not yet confirmed) that Season 3 will introduce the Jinchu arc for the first time.

Back in 1994, the manga known as “Rurouni Kenshin,” originally titled “Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story,” was published weekly in a popular magazine called “Weekly Shonen Jump.” This epic tale was later collected into 28 volumes. Shortly after, it was brought to life as an anime by Studio Gallop and Studio Deen in 1996. Over the years, this series has gained classic status. In 2021, it even garnered a whopping 150,000 votes to be included in a poll. However, it’s important to note that the creator of “Rurouni Kenshin,” Nobuhiro Watsuki, has had some controversial moments in his history.

What Has Caused Ruroni Kenshin To Be Plagued With Controversy?

Some devoted fans of the long-running anime series “Rurouni Kenshin” have decided to separate the art from the artist in their appreciation. However, it’s crucial to address why numerous anime enthusiasts are urging against the further development of the manga and anime. On November 21, 2017, the creator of “Rurouni Kenshin,” Nobuhiro Watsuki, was indicted for possessing child pornography by the Tokyo Police, who found several such DVDs in his office. During their investigation, they also discovered over 100 DVDs containing underage girls being exploited in his home. At the time of his arrest, Watsuki admitted to the charges levied against him.

Following the revelation of allegations against him, the publication of Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc was paused temporarily while he faced trial for illegal activities involving child pornography. In Japan, it has been unlawful since 2015 to possess explicit images or videos that exploit minors. Offenders can face imprisonment for up to one year and a fine of approximately $6,700 USD in 2025. However, Watsuki was eventually fined a relatively small sum of around $1,300 USD in 2025 and resumed serializing his manga later that same year.

Even though it appears that the industry is proceeding, seemingly disconnecting an artist’s work from his actions, this doesn’t imply fans should easily overlook the cause behind his temporary removal from Shueisha’s imprints. However, this doesn’t mean everyone has forgiven Watsuki for his misdeed; for instance, Howard Wang, Kenshin’s voice actor in the anime, is contributing earnings from portraying the character to the Child Rescue Coalition, demonstrating that some still hold him accountable.
