Russell Brand is denying his charges.
Following accusations by London’s Metropolitan Police, involving one charge of rape, two charges of sexual assault, and one charge of indecent assault related to incidents from 1999 to 2005, the comedian issued a detailed response asserting his innocence.
In a video posted on April 4th, he clarified that during his younger, single days, before he found love, married, and became a father to his lovely kids, he was indeed quite reckless. He said, “I made plenty of mistakes, I was far from wise.” He went on to explain that prior to embracing the teachings of the Lord, he struggled with drug addiction, compulsive sexual behavior, and overall lack of judgment, but he insisted that he never crossed the line into rape.
In contrast to his past admission in an article for The Guardian published two years following the last reported incident, Brand, a father of three with wife Laura Brand, underscored that he never engaged in any activities without consent.
He went on to say, ‘I hope it’s clear when you look into my eyes.’ He wanted to express his gratitude for the ongoing support from everyone.
Prior to his scheduled court appearance on May 2 to address the accusations, which involve four different women, Brand conveyed that he feels “appreciative” for the chance to “present my case and defend these charges in court.
On April 4, Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service announced that charges had been brought against Brand following an investigation into accusations leveled against him, which were initially reported by Channel 4 and The Sunday Times in 2023, as well as direct reports made to the police.
Detective Superintendant Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police, overseeing the investigation, stated that women who have submitted reports are still receiving assistance from specially trained officers. He emphasized that the Met’s inquiry is ongoing, and he encourages anyone impacted by this case or possessing relevant information to reach out to the police for a discussion.
In January, Brand acknowledged sexual accusations from British news outlets, stating that his past behavior, which he referred to as “promiscuity,” was exploitative rather than criminal in nature.
He stated on his social media platform, “It’s clear that such actions are harmful and sinful.” However, in a complex situation, these actions were later redefined as criminal by various media outlets, a process he described as the behavior spreading and being reshaped over time.
