Although viewers have recently enjoyed the 15th season comeback of Doctor Who, there’s a lot of speculation about what lies ahead for the series since no additional seasons have been officially announced yet.
The fate of the show may be influenced by a choice made by Disney+, since the BBC has an agreement with them for financing and producing the series.
It’s been communicated to us that a final decision won’t be reached until the end of season 2.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that showrunner Russell T Davies has given us a glimmer of hope, hinting at his extensive preparations if we’re fortunate enough to witness more seasons unfold.
According to Davies, he shared with Parade: “If given the opportunity to continue, we’ll always focus on the future. I have concepts brewing. I believe I might execute them around seasons 4 or 5. This is generally how I approach projects.
Indeed, there will be fantastic surprises awaiting you at the end of season 4. Many seeds we’ve planted earlier will blossom in the future. It’s all about the thrill and excitement that Doctor Who provides. To put it another way, enjoy each step of the journey.
This current series of Doctor Who is often called Season 2 because it’s the second one produced in collaboration with Disney. Consequently, Russell T. Davies has been working on episodes that won’t air for a while yet.

Davies’s reference to “pit stops” signifies topics he discussed earlier in the interview, emphasizing that “Doctor Who thrives as an anthology series”. Though there is a “larger narrative”, these temporary pauses or episodes are essentially what Doctor Who is all about.
He went on saying: “Different planets – one was Miami in 1952, another was Lagos, then The Interstellar Song Contest, a fearful planet named 6767 in 500,000 years from now. This is the essence of Doctor Who. And I believe it’s the finest episode in the series.
More recently, Davies hinted at a potential break for the series, recalling its previous hiatus which lasted until 1996, followed by a TV movie and another full season in 2005, all under Davies’ direction.
In conversation with Newsround, Davies expressed: “The Doctor has somewhat attained a status similar to Robin Hood. Occasionally, there may be a gap, and during that gap, the viewers of Newsround today might grow older and write their own stories, revisiting it in years to come.
I firmly believe it will thrive, as I stand as evidence of its survival, and such is the destiny of great ideas – they never truly perish.
Currently, actor Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the Fifteenth Doctor, has been questioned regarding the series’ potential continuation and if he might reprise his role in a new season.
He shared with Variety: “My mind is overflowing with Season 2 ideas, as it’s been incredibly spectacular. It’s quite amusing that in a series centered around time travel, I can’t discuss the future, but I can praise Season 2 and how exceptional it is, as well as the talent of Varada [Sethu].
Season fifteen of Doctor Who will debut on the 19th of April, 2025. It will be available on BBC iPlayer starting at 8 am, and you can catch it on BBC One at 6:50 pm.
