Amazon Studios has made the decision to discontinue two spin-offs of the spy-thriller series “Citadel,” which the Russo brothers were executive producing. Originally, these non-English language adaptations were set to premiere last fall and have additional projects in development. As reported by Variety on Wednesday, the shows “Citadel: Diana” and “Citadel: Honey Bunny” have been canceled. Instead of standalone series, their narratives will now be integrated into the second season of the original “Citadel” series. It’s unexpected to see a studio retracting projects associated with the Russos, despite them not being creators, showrunners, or directors on these specific productions. Amazon MGM Studios, however, remains optimistic about the future of “Citadel.
Vernon Sanders, head of television at the studio, announced that elements from both ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’ and ‘Citadel: Diana’, which have successfully traveled through India and Italy, will be incorporated into the second season of the original series ‘Citadel’. Although these popular international chapters won’t continue as standalone series, Season 2 of ‘Citadel’ promises to be even more thrilling. With intricate plotlines, fresh faces joining our talented cast, and a daring cinematic approach, the new season will intensify the emotional odysseys of Nadia, Mason, and Orlick as they confront the unyielding power of Manticore.”

However, they find themselves under threat from a shadowy rival agency known as Manticore. The series also includes intriguing sci-fi elements like memory manipulation and cutting-edge technology.
From the start, Anthony and Joe Russo were involved in this concept when Amazon approached their independent studio, AGBO. Originally, Josh Applebaum and André Nemec were the screenwriters, but they reportedly departed due to creative disagreements with the Russos. Numerous sources suggest that the Russos played a significant role in developing this series, and the promotional materials heavily emphasized their involvement.
Currently, the Russos are juggling multiple projects. Notably, they have returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the upcoming film, “Avengers: Doomsday,” which they will be shooting over the next few months. Following their work on “The Electric State,” they also have two more high-profile non-franchise movies in production soon.
Currently, the original series “Citadel” and its two offshoots are available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Given that their narratives will become interconnected in “Citadel” Season 2, which is expected to premiere around early 2026, it’s crucial to catch up on all of them now.
