Ryan Reynolds Had Perfect Response to Possible DCU Return as Green Lantern

As a die-hard fan of both Ryan Reynolds and the DC Universe, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia as the Green Lantern series makes its comeback on HBO. While the 2011 movie may have been a stumble for the character, it was a significant stepping stone in Ryan Reynolds’ career, leading him to his iconic role as Deadpool and, more importantly, to the woman who would become his wife, Blake Lively.

Despite Green Lantern being one of DC’s notable disappointments more than a decade back, there’s a chance for a comeback with HBO’s upcoming DCU series. Fans will recall that Ryan Reynolds played the title character in the 2011 film, and with the universe getting a fresh start under James Gunn, the Co-CEO of DC Studios, he playfully reached out to Reynolds. In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he shared that Reynolds was among the first people he contacted about rejoining the universe. Given Reynolds’ past criticisms of the movie, it’s not hard to guess his response to the question.

Gunn stated that Ryan Reynolds doesn’t seem interested in the Lanterns series when his name was brought up. He shared that one of the first people he spoke to after getting the job was Ryan Reynolds. Gunn asked if Reynolds would return, to which he replied something like, “Leave me alone!

It’s no secret that the MCU star doesn’t miss the role of Green Lantern at all. Reynolds has spoken at length about not liking the result or the experience, and even admitted that he was rooting for the film to fail so he wouldn’t have to return for a possible sequel. As Marvel fans may no doubt recall, a post-credit scene in Deadpool 2 featured the Merc with a mouth shooting Reynolds in the head as he held the script for Green Lantern. As recently as 2021, Reynolds admitted that he tried to give the movie a chance by rewatching it drunk, saying that the movie was “was nothing to fear!” while praising the “Hundreds of incredible crew and cast members” and summarizing his feelings on Green Lantern with “it’s not perfect, it ain’t a tragedy.”

A significant portion of Reynolds’ irritation was rooted in the filming itself. Yet, Reynolds moved on to a different character, and through his determination with Deadpool, he carved out a niche for himself in superhero films. The DC project merely represents a minor entry on his impressive resume.

Despite no longer being enthusiastic about Green Lantern, it was still the setting where Ryan Reynolds met his spouse, Blake Lively. Moreover, the character might have played a part in propelling him to the immense success that Deadpool enjoys today. It’s worth noting whether the impressive earnings of the last film would have occurred if he hadn’t gone through the DCU.

Despite the 2011 Green Lantern movie not doing well, Gunn is eager to redefine the superhero’s impact on audiences through a new series. This project, given the green light in June, has already sparked enthusiasm among fans following Tom King’s positive comments about the show’s casting. The upcoming series will feature Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre from “Rebel Ridge” as John Stewart, with Kelly Macdonald and Garret Dillahunt also joining the cast.
