For instance, he has had an unparalleled view of a primarily family-friendly franchise thriving by venturing into R-rated territory. Last year alone, Deadpool and Wolverine grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. Contrary to the third Deadpool film, Reynolds emphasized that a potential Star Wars movie wouldn’t be slapped with an R rating for explicit content, but rather to accommodate more mature storytelling.

From a passionate film enthusiast’s perspective, the cinematic experience that has come closest to Star Wars for me is Andor. This thrilling series wrapped up its two-season journey on the 2025 TV schedule just this month, but I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to explore. As previously mentioned, Ryan Reynolds might not be interested in taking on a starring role in an R-rated Star Wars film, but he expresses a keen interest in contributing to its creative development, sharing his thoughts: “I wouldn’t mind being part of shaping the future of this iconic universe.
I’m not expressing a desire to be directly involved in it. It wouldn’t align with my interests. Instead, I’d prefer to work on the creation and scriptwriting, or be involved behind the scenes. These types of intellectual properties thrive on scarcity and unexpected twists. Although ‘Star Wars’ doesn’t offer scarcity due to Disney+, there’s still room for surprise and intrigue.
I don’t typically fall into the category of individuals who believe the Star Wars series should solely be geared towards adults. Instead, it remains a mythology primarily designed to captivate younger audiences, as demonstrated by productions like The Mandalorian and Skeleton Crew. However, I concur with Ryan Reynolds that Disney could experiment with an R-rated Star Wars film to gauge its success. Given the achievement of Andor on Disney+, which barely skirted truly R-rated content, it’s intriguing to consider how a full-blown R-rated movie might perform. In essence, there’s no reason we can’t strike a balance and cater to both age groups effectively.
I’m hoping that Disney and Lucasfilm may one day feel confident enough to proceed with this project, regardless of whether Ryan Reynolds is involved or not. In the meantime, “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will hit theaters on May 22, 2026, and the movie “Star Wars: Starfighter,” starring Ryan Gosling, will be released a week later on May 28, 2027.
