Ryan Reynolds’ Reaction to Deadpool Showing Up in Avengers Movies Is Not What We Wanted to Hear

As a die-hard Marvel fan with over two decades of comic book enthusiast under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and dismay upon hearing Ryan Reynolds’ response about Deadpool potentially joining the Avengers lineup. The success of “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been nothing short of phenomenal, and it’s evident that audiences are yearning for more adventures with the Merc with a Mouth.

Actor Ryan Reynolds, famous for his roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, has discussed the prospect of reprising his role in an upcoming Avengers film, and fans may find his response underwhelming. In a conversation with Variety on their Awards Circuit Podcast, Reynolds was questioned about the potential return of Wade Wilson to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, possibly in either the 2026 release Avengers: Doomsday or the 2027 film Avengers: Secret Wars.

“I’m not even being cagey,” Reynolds said. “We’ll see what happens there.”

In the summer of 2024, Deadpool, as portrayed by Reynolds, made his official entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine”. This was the third solo film for the character and it proved to be a massive box office success, raking in $1.3 billion globally, significantly boosting the reputation of the MCU. The year 2023 wasn’t particularly successful for Marvel, with movies like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and TV series such as “Secret Invasion” not performing as well. However, “Deadpool & Wolverine” was the breath of fresh air that Marvel needed, becoming the hit they desperately sought. Currently, it ranks as the second highest-grossing film of 2024 (behind only “Inside Out 2” from Pixar), and holds the record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made.

The overwhelming response to those kinds of films suggests there’s plenty of enthusiasm for more Deadpool adventures, yet Marvel has been silent on the character’s cinematic destiny since the release of Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel Studios currently has a bustling lineup of movies planned for release between 2025 and 2027, featuring titles like Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Additionally, there are specific dates reserved for unnamed MCU films in the years 2026, 2027, and 2028. As for Ryan Reynolds, he recently disclosed that he’ll devote the next year to writing a new script for a film that won’t be part of the Marvel Universe, where he and Jackman will star together.

One enjoyable aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is witnessing different characters interact with each other. Memorable instances often occur when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are just chatting in a room. Given this, it’s easy to understand why fans would be excited about Deadpool joining the group. The hilarity of watching him converse with heroes like Thor, Sam Wilson, and others is promising. However, incorporating Deadpool into the Avengers could pose challenges due to his R-rated nature. A significant factor behind the success of the Deadpool franchise lies in its ability to revel in graphic violence and strong language. If Deadpool were to transition into an Avenger, filmmakers would need to tone down these elements to meet a PG-13 rating, which could potentially disappoint viewers.

A characteristic that’s typical of Deadpool, which could pose a challenge in an Avengers movie, is his habit of breaking the fourth wall. This style works well within the realm of zany comedy, but might not have the same impact in a more serious drama with high-stakes global events. While Marvel films do include humor, there’s a difference between Captain America jokingly introducing himself to Groot during combat and Deadpool commenting on the similarity between the actor playing Doctor Doom and the one who played Iron Man. Nonetheless, it would be intriguing for directors Joe and Anthony Russo to find a way to incorporate Deadpool into the storyline, provided they can do so without causing unnecessary distractions. If successful, fans would eagerly welcome more of Wade’s antics.
