As a longtime observer of the entertainment industry, I’ve seen my fair share of labor disputes and strikes. But this current situation with SAG-AFTRA members going on strike against video game companies is particularly noteworthy.
Once again, union members are going on strike.
Beginning July 26, at 12:01 a.m., SAG-AFTRA members engaged in interactive media projects such as video games will go on strike. This decision comes after more than a year of negotiations between the union and companies like Activision Publishing, Electronic Arts, Insomniac Games, Take-Two Interactive, and others. The dispute revolves around the lack of an agreement providing safeguards against the misuse of artificial intelligence in their work.
“SAG-AFTRA’s president, Fran Drescher, has made it clear that the union will not agree to contracts permitting misuse of A.I. at the expense of its members. The time for empty promises from companies is over. Once they present a fair agreement for our members to thrive in, SAG-AFTRA will be prepared for negotiations.”
As a researcher investigating this topic, I’ve discovered that several prominent gaming companies are feeling the impact of ongoing strikes. Some of the most notable titles under their belts include Apex Legends, Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto, among others.
“Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the lead negotiator, expressed his amazement that video game studios seem oblivious to the lessons from last year. Our union members are capable and determined to fight for fair and equitable treatment regarding A.I., and the general public backs us in this endeavor,” he stated.
Are all gaming companies being struck right now?
The Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement, the Interim Interactive Media Agreement, and the Interim Interactive Localization Agreement. These agreements cater to various scenarios and ensure SAG-AFTRA members receive essential protections against artificial intelligence usage in their roles.
