Sailor Moon Cosmos: Release date, cast, trailer for Netflix two-parter

As a long-time aficionado of anime and manga, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming release of Sailor Moon Cosmos! Having grown up with the original series, it brings me immense joy to see Usagi’s story reaching its climax after so many years. The fact that British fans will finally get to witness the epic battle against Sailor Galaxia is like a dream come true!

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to announce that the final arc of my cherished manga, Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi, is about to set sail in the UK. The Stars arc won’t be far from our shores!

For the very first time, British viewers will have the opportunity to watch Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians battle against Sailor Galaxia in a two-part movie, originally screened cinematically in Japan in 2023. The ’90s anime’s Stars arc was not officially broadcasted in the UK due to its content.

Exciting stuff!

Here’s everything you need to know.

Sailor Moon Cosmos release date

Sailor Moon Cosmos will be released on Netflix on 22nd August 2024.

Sailor Moon Cosmos plot

In the movies based on the original comic, the narrative unfolds as Usagi is drawn into a fresh conflict, following her boyfriend Mamoru’s (Tuxedo Mask) proposal and departure for overseas studies.

Later on, Usagi encounters a popular teenage band called The Three Lights, who’ve been creating a sensation in Japan, and surprisingly enough, they’ve joined her school in Azabu-jūban, Tokyo.

What follows is a breathless chase to prevent the end of the universe as Sailor Galaxia begins to strip Usagi of her friends, leaving just a small girl named Chibi Chibi to help Usagi fight for her future, along with Sailor Guardians called the Starlights and their princess, Kakyū.

Back in 1991, I found myself immersed in the world of Sailor Moon as its manga serialization kicked off in Nakayoshi magazine. Simultaneously, an anime adaptation was underway, masterfully crafted by Toei Animation. What a magical journey it’s been ever since!

They both had significant storylines: The Dark Kingdom saga, where Sailor Moon first appeared and fought Queen Beryl, and the Black Moon saga, during which the Guardians traveled to the future, establishing Crystal Tokyo under the guidance of Chibi-Usa, who is Usagi and Mamoru’s future daughter.

Currently, an eclipse signaled the onset of the Dark Moon storyline, during which the enigmatic Dead Moon Circus pursued a peculiar winged steed called Helios and sought a unique Dream.

In the original anime, there were numerous instances where the storyline deviated from the manga, taking its own unique path. For example, the Doom Tree arc and the mini-arc at the start of Stars, where Queen Nehellenia was freed temporarily by Galaxia for a climactic battle with the 10 Sailor Guardians from her mirror prison.

Nevertheless, the Stars’ storyline diverged into a separate timeline, culminating in a grand six-episode finale where Usagi lost each of her friends to Galaxia. This left her shattered and isolated.

In the heart-pounding moments of our beloved series, it wasn’t until Chibi Chibi unveiled her true identity as the Beacon of Hope and transformed into a hallowed blade that I, in awe, recalled myself. With the mighty force of love coursing through me, I found the strength to rescue Sailor Galaxia from the clutches of Chaos.

2014 saw Toei revealing Sailor Moon Crystal, a fresh take on the series that reimagined Usagi’s tale based on the original manga.

Initially, the prosperity of seasons 1 through 3 paved the way for Sailor Moon Eternal, a two-part movie that depicted the Dead Moon arc and premiered on Netflix in 2021. This marked the first instance for many enthusiasts, including those residing in the UK, to legally stream the anime via streaming.

In the animated movie “Sailor Moon Cosmos”, it adheres strictly to the storyline of the manga. The initial portion of the film centers around the demise of the other Guardians, while the latter part involves the surviving Guardians embarking on a cosmic journey to confront Shadow Galactica’s base and engage in battle with Chaos and Galaxia. Additionally, they are reconnected with Chibi-usa, their fellow Guardians, and encounter the enigmatic Sailor Cosmos.

While it is a one-to-one adaption of the manga, there are some important nods to the ’90s anime.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that this updated production features a fresh take on the ’90s anthem, Sailor Star Song, along with the Nagareboshi He theme and opening sequences reminiscent of the timeless Stars sequences for each half of the film. This is a fantastic journey down memory lane for long-time fans craving a nostalgia trip, while also inviting newcomers to witness how Usagi’s story concludes.

Just like Netflix’s other anime offerings, you’ll find both subtitled and dubbed versions (in English and multiple languages) available. This means you can choose your preferred way of watching it!

Additionally, the score will be available on popular music platforms synchronously with its release. If you can’t wait and want to listen now, I recommend checking out the Sailor Moon Cosmos Theme Song Collection, which encompasses all tracks featured in the two movies, accessible via the official Sailor Moon YouTube channel.

Sailor Moon Cosmos cast

Kotono Mitsuishi, renowned for voicing Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon, declared her retirement from the cherished Sailor Guardian role following the release of two films. However, it’s not a complete farewell, as creator and Manaka Naoko Takeuchi continues to produce artwork from the series, including a new art book. Additionally, hints suggest that she is engaged in something connected to the franchise.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that some familiar voices from the enchanting world of Sailor Moon Crystal and Eternal are reprising their roles. Among them is Stephanie Shah, who brings Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon to life, and Robbie Daymond, the man behind Tuxedo Mask!

As a film enthusiast, I wholeheartedly recommend adding these movies to your must-watch list right away! Keep in mind that even though this marks the conclusion of Usagi’s adventure, her tale is far from over!
