As a gamer who grew up in the 90s and was deeply immersed in the world of anime, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of nostalgia when I hear about the passing of Emi Shinohara, the voice behind Sailor Jupiter. Her role as Makoto Kino was more than just an iconic character to us; she was a symbol of strength, resilience, and determination that resonated with many of us during our formative years.
Over the last month, several prominent figures in the voice acting world have passed away. Notable names like James Earl Jones and Peter Renaday, who are well-known for their roles in entertainment, have recently died. Adding to this sad news, Emi Shinohara, the voice actress adored as Sailor Jupiter from the popular series Sailor Moon, passed away on September 8. In tribute to her work, the creator of Sailor Moon has released a special illustration.
In the image presented, Naoko Takeuchi beautifully breathes life into Sailor Jupiter, depicting her in her iconic green uniform. The illustration is simple yet captivating, with Sailor Jupiter’s long hair tied back and her eyes gleaming brightly in this heartfelt tribute. Additionally, Takeuchi wrote a brief message to Shinohara alongside the artwork.

To Emi Shinohara, you remain forever within my heart, said the Sailor Moon artist. I hold faith that our paths will cross once more.
Remembering Emi Shinohara’s Greatest Works
If you’re not familiar with Emi Shinohara, let me fill you in. She started her career in 1986, having spent a significant part of her younger years involved in drama clubs and camps. Her initial foray into acting was as a voice actress in the movie titled “Project A-ko“. It was in this film that she lent her voice to the character B-ko Daitokuji. From there, Shinohara continued to grow her acting resume.
1992 saw the arrival of the rising series, Sailor Moon, as Shinohara tried out for the parts. She was offered to voice Sailor Jupiter, or Makoto Kino, a character she would lend her voice to for many years. During this time, Shinohara also landed significant roles such as Ophelia in Claymore, Presea in Magic Knight Rayearth, and Kushina Uzumaki in Naruto Shippuden.
What’s Next for Sailor Moon
It’s been a long time since the original “Sailor Moon” anime ended, but Shinohara’s influence on the series remains strong. Takeuchi holds a special place in her heart for Shinohara, a sentiment that extends to her family as well. This affection is not just limited to Takeuchi – even her husband has paid tribute to the late voice actress. In fact, Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of “Yu Yu Hakusho” and “Hunter x Hunter,” drew an illustration of Sailor Jupiter soon after Takeuchi posted hers. It was in this post that Togashi commended Shinohara for her outstanding work throughout the years.
I’m still thrilled about Sailor Moon, a series that refuses to fade even after its original run ended decades ago. Back in 1997, Takeuchi concluded her beloved manga, but it didn’t take long for anime adaptations to pick up the torch and bring the story of Sailor Moon to life. The latest revival is none other than Sailor Moon Cosmos, which just landed on Netflix across the US!
