Over the last several months, it appears that OpenAI has been making strategic steps towards expanding its offerings beyond merely creating AI models and ChatGPT. There are whispers of a potential partnership with ex-Apple design chief Jony Ive for a screenless ChatGPT smartphone.
It appears that the company could potentially expand its reach further. As per a report by The Verge, the creators of ChatGPT are working on a new social media platform, aiming to compete with Elon Musk’s X (previously Twitter) and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta apps.
Yet, specifics concerning this latest advancement remain scant, given its early-stage status. According to The Verge, there exists an internal prototype that incorporates a social feed for ChatGPT’s image generation.
As a dedicated follower, I find it intriguing that Sam Altman, the OpenAI CEO, seems to be actively seeking opinions about our beloved project. This could imply that he’s weighing its potential value, perhaps considering if it’s worth his time and resources to delve deeper into it.
It is yet undecided if the social network will launch independently as an app or merge with ChatGPT, thereby enabling OpenAI to access the vast user community of the AI application.
Based on insider knowledge of the project, OpenAI’s social media platform is being developed to facilitate users in sharing more engaging content. A secretive OpenAI team member commented, “The seamless integration with X has left everyone envious,” and further added, “It’s particularly impressive how people craft viral tweets by making it appear as if it’s saying something foolish.
ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app https://t.co/663VkHN4qBFebruary 27, 2025
In February, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, referred to a report from CNBC about Meta’s intention to launch a separate Meta AI app aimed at competing with ChatGPT. Altman humorously commented, “If Facebook attempts to challenge us, we’ll simply counter them, and that would be quite amusing.
In the same month, I noticed Sam Altman extending a proposition to purchase OpenAI for approximately $9.74 billion. Elon Musk, visibly upset, retorted with a label, “Swindler.” This response stemmed from Musk’s endeavor to acquire OpenAI himself, at an estimated cost of $97.4 billion.
It’s common knowledge that Elon Musk has taken legal action against OpenAI, claiming a significant deviation from its original purpose and alleging participation in unlawful business practices such as racketeering.
If OpenAI indeed proceeds with the speculated plans to establish a social network, it might potentially tap into previously unexplored data sources for training its leading AI models. This is based on reports suggesting that the scaling laws may be slowing down the advancement of AI.
