This past week, ChatGPT received the ability to create images, courtesy of OpenAI. This functionality is fueled by the company’s GPT-4o AI model, enabling users to generate images directly from text inputs or adjust pre-existing images according to their liking.
It’s important to mention that the experience can be found in OpenAI’s text-to-video model, Sora. Originally, it was planned to roll out the image generation tool to users with Free, Plus, Team, and Pro memberships incrementally.
However, this arrangement has since changed. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman:
As a researcher, I must share an intriguing observation: The popularity of images in ChatGPT has surpassed our initial anticipations, far exceeding even our high expectations. Regrettably, the rollout to our free tier will experience a temporary delay.
The popularity of images in chatGPT has significantly surpassed our initial anticipations, which were already quite high. Regrettably, the deployment of this feature to our free tier will have to wait for some time. (March 26, 2025)
It’s still undecided when OpenAI will provide the image generation feature to free users of ChatGPT. But if you’re a subscriber to OpenAI’s premium services, such as ChatGPT Plus for $20 monthly or the $200/month Pro plan, you can use this feature immediately.
Recently, there’s been a surge of social media posts showcasing users’ delight over ChatGPT-4o’s ability to generate images. They’ve emphasized the tool’s unrestricted creativity, enabling them to explore their ideas freely through their prompts.
Previously, various image generation tools were constrained by significant limitations that appeared to significantly restrict their potential. For example, tools like Copilot and Midjourney find it challenging to produce a straightforward white image, while on the other hand, they are capable of generating intricate structural designs, raising concerns about the future role of architects and interior designers as these tools might replace them with advanced capabilities.
In much the same way, AI tools don’t have the ability to depict a wine glass overflowing. Instead, they may only see it as half empty. I suspect that the delayed release of OpenAI’s image generation tool for ChatGPT free users might be partly due to GPU shortages, considering the immense excitement surrounding this feature.
The CEO of OpenAI recently explained that the delay in release is because of a scarcity in GPU supplies, with Altman adding humorously, “We’re running out of GPUs.
It’s great enjoying the enthusiasm for images in chatGPT, but our systems are currently overheating due to the high demand. As we work on improving efficiency, we’ll be implementing some temporary rate limits. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope this won’t last long! Starting March 27, 2025, the free tier of chatGPT will offer 3 generations per day.
The leader mentioned that they are implementing a restriction on the number of uses for this tool as they work on making it more effective. Furthermore, he disclosed that users who don’t pay for ChatGPT can expect up to 3 iterations per day once the tool becomes widely accessible.
