Since its initial release in 2022, ChatGPT has made significant strides, evolving from experiencing hallucinations and providing incorrect responses to gaining widespread popularity on social media due to the viral spread of Studio Ghibli memes.
The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, stated that ChatGPT currently surpasses the capabilities of any human who has ever existed. Yet, he expressed worries about the excessive trust people place in this AI chatbot, as it can sometimes fabricate information, a phenomenon known as hallucinating. Altman further emphasized, “The technology we should be cautious about is the one we don’t trust too much.
In more current times, the executive presented an engaging image of a future ChatGPT (as reported by Barchart). He stated that the software would operate continuously, monitor all your data, recognize the optimal moment to reach out to you, and even take actions on your behalf when necessary.
The situation seems somewhat similar to Microsoft’s debated Windows Recall feature. At this point, access to the AI-enhanced tool is only available to certain users and is being gradually introduced. However, it allows users to record all their activities on Copilot+ PCs through screenshots. The data is then kept securely for potential future use in a storage area called triage.
Altman’s vision also depicts an enhanced version of ChatGPT that reaches beyond simple text prompts and image generation, expanding its capabilities as we move into the age of agentic AI. In this era, tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are increasingly becoming versatile and taking on more companion-like roles in our daily lives.
Current computers might not support the future version of ChatGPT
Contrary to his earlier belief, Sam Altman acknowledged that existing computers were not engineered for an AI-centric world. Remarkably, he later suggested that people might even welcome a new gadget if it was designed specifically for AI applications.
The executive linked his assertions to the dynamic nature of our world, particularly with the increasing use of AI, implying a future where software and hardware requirements might evolve into systems that are exceptionally responsive to their surroundings and better integrated with personal lives.
From my perspective as an analyst, it’s crucial to acknowledge the contingency that hinges upon the resolution of the current business competition between Microsoft and OpenAI. This situation carries a degree of sensitivity due to its time-bound nature, which could potentially impact investment decisions significantly, with SoftBank being one of the key investors at stake.
It appears that Microsoft is delaying the transition, allegedly to safeguard its own benefits, such as its substantial $13 billion investment. Notably, Microsoft seems to be aiming for a larger share in the potential new Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) than OpenAI is prepared to provide.
As a tech enthusiast, I’m excitedly following the developments between Microsoft and OpenAI. While a report hints at Microsoft being content to carry on with their partnership until 2030, the intriguing twist is that OpenAI might accelerate their timeline by unveiling an AI coding assistant. This assistant could potentially outperform human programmers, leading OpenAI to break ties earlier than anticipated. It’s a thrilling prospect, and I can’t wait to see how this unfolds!
It’s worth noting that some experts, such as NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, suggest that coding jobs could be significantly impacted by AI advancements. In fact, Huang predicts that the field might no longer exist in its current form in the near future. Instead, he encourages the younger generation to explore other industries like manufacturing, agriculture, and biology, as these sectors may offer more long-term opportunities.
According to Microsoft’s co-founder, Bill Gates, it is likely that artificial intelligence (AI) will take over many tasks, but there are certain professions such as energy experts, biologists, and coders that will continue to exist due to their inherent complexity, making them difficult to fully automate using AI.
It’s intriguing to consider how Microsoft might respond should OpenAI proceed with their plans. This development could potentially spark long-lasting legal disputes, keeping tech companies entangled in courtrooms for extended periods. However, let’s hope that ChatGPT hasn’t inadvertently brought about the end of humanity before these issues arise!
