Sam Mendes’ Shocking Documentary on Bergen-Belsen: Release Date Revealed!

The launch date is set for Sam Mendes’ upcoming documentary movie titled What They Found. This captivating film narrates the account of two soldiers from the British Army’s Film and Photographic Unit, who accompanied the troops during the liberation of Bergen-Belsen towards the end of World War II.

In my view, I was captivated by the groundbreaking documentary, the debut work of Mendes, which skillfully weaves together archival footage and personal accounts to narrate a compelling tale. Notably, this film is set to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation.

The movie is set to be broadcast on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer starting at 10pm on Monday, April 7th. So, it won’t be much longer before you can watch it!

On April 15th, 1945, British soldier-filmmakers Sgt Mike Lewis and Sgt Bill Lawrie, who were part of the Army Film and Photographic Unit documenting the North West Europe campaign, followed British soldiers to a location they were informed was a typhus hospital in Northern Germany, known as Bergen-Belsen.

Upon reaching the location, the true extent of the events unfolding within the camp became evident to them, and for the very first time, the world was able to witness this reality through their recorded evidence.

What They Found engulfs viewers in Lewis and Lawrie’s recordings and statements, crafting a heartfelt and intimately personal account that delves into two average men’s wartime experiences, thereby offering insights into the horror and sorrow of the Holocaust.

When the movie was initially unveiled, I expressed in a statement: “By employing merely the voices and footage captured by two British military cameramen during the closing phases of World War II, I aim for this documentary to offer a distinct vantage point on the revelation of the atrocities at Belsen, and the grim authenticity of the Holocaust experience.

Mendes has gained recognition for his direction of movies like 1917, Skyfall, and Spectre, and moreover, he served as an executive producer for the latest comedic series on Sky called The Franchise.

Additionally, it has been indicated that he will be taking on the role of director for a quartet of interlinked movies, each focusing on one of The Beatles’ members. Reports suggest that Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan are among those being considered for roles in these films.
