Sandi Toksvig on quitting Bake Off: ‘I walked away from the biggest pay cheque of my life because I didn’t enjoy it’

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for reality TV, I must confess that Sandi Toksvig’s departure from The Great British Bake Off left me slightly bewildered. Her decision to walk away from the biggest paycheck of her life is not something one stumbles upon casually.

Sandi Toksvig has spoken about why she’s leaving The Great British Bake Off, explaining that the three years she spent on the program felt like the longest years of her life.

Previously this year, the broadcaster stated that she left the Channel 4 program because it stopped being enjoyable for her. However, her recent remarks in an interview with The Times hint that she might not have ever truly enjoyed the stint on the show.

As a devoted cinephile, I firmly assert, “I chose to pass on it.” The offer on the table was a lucrative one, but it held no allure for me. Truth be told, I had never even considered watching it before, and that remains unchanged. Frankly, I struggled to grasp its essence. Just as cakes are easily found in stores, this film failed to pique my interest or resonate with my understanding of cinema.

Toksvig went on to say, “I found the experience unpleasant. We’d stand for hours at the end of a long table while Prue [Leith] and Paul [Hollywood] sampled everything. We hardly talked or tasted anything ourselves. I often asked, ‘Can’t we sit down? I’m not contributing,’ but they wouldn’t let me.

The newspaper went ahead and inquired whether she maintained contact with any co-stars from The Great British Baking Show, to which Toksvig admitted that she and Prue Leith are very close, often describing themselves as being “inseparable.

In my observations, I seem to find a difference in her interactions compared to the other two personalities from her Bake Off stint. She mentioned Paul Hollywood as being “constantly preoccupied” and rather elusive to connect with, while Ms. Toksvig simply declined when asked about Noel Fielding.

In a final blow, the broadcaster admitted she didn’t savor tasting the elaborate pastries crafted by the contestants on the show, revealing instead that her weakness lies in cheese.

In January, Toksvig confessed to TopMob magazine that her time on Bake Off had grown dull for her.

She mentioned that she was actually standing there observing meringues as they dried, contemplating, “Oh my goodness, my intellect seems to be deteriorating.

Fielding replied to the comments, stating to The Guardian: “Sandi, known for her immense intellect, attended Cambridge and demonstrates great intelligence in both writing and politics. She requires intellectual stimulation.

“She never stays anywhere too long, except QI, which is the perfect show for her.”

The Great British Bake Off continues tomorrow, Tuesday 8th October, at 8pm on Channel 4.
