Sandy’s Shadow Looms Large Over Roy’s Future

Heading into Grace season 5, the show has seen a couple of major change-ups.

Apart from the shift in cast members, as Craig Parkinson is no longer part of the series, there’s also been a significant change in the narrative. By the conclusion of season 4, John Simm’s character, Roy, finds himself in a completely altered position.

From the start of the series, Roy has been troubled by the vanishing of his spouse, Sandy.

Yet, during the final episode of season 4, it was revealed that she had been admitted to a hospital in Germany. Tragically, she ended her life there afterward.

In the note addressed to Roy, it was disclosed that he has a child called Bruno. Sandy, in her request, asked Roy to take care of this little boy.

It might appear as though the enigma surrounding Sandy has been resolved, but the actors from the show have recently disclosed that her influence will persist and remain noticeable within it.

John Simm shared that he found himself in a bit of a dilemma regarding the storyline. He understood that fans, over the course of the entire series, had grown invested in the “Sandy” plotline, and it wouldn’t be fair to prolong the suspense indefinitely. Therefore, a resolution was necessary, as viewers deserved answers to the lingering questions.

“But on the other hand, I really liked it.

A shadowy presence had long loomed over him, associated with his identity as the detective with the vanished wife, whose case remained unsolved. Now that this source of danger in his life had disappeared, I found myself harboring some concerns.

Our detective character can’t be perpetually content without any personal struggles, as he excels in his profession, displays kind-heartedness, enjoys a deep romantic relationship, and experiences no complications whatsoever.

Our detective is exceptional at his job, but instead of being a stereotypical troubled character, he’s a nice guy who’s also in love. However, we want to avoid making him too perfect with no challenges or conflicts.

I had been a bit concerned about potentially revealing something. However, considering the plotlines created by Peter James, there’s ample danger for Roy Grace. Hence, my concerns were unwarranted.

Glenn Richie Campbell remarked, “Instead of jumping out of a hot skillet, we’ve landed in another. It feels like, ‘Ah, we’ve dealt with the Sandy situation, and now we could relax,’ only to find, ‘Well, it seems we can finally take a breath.’

“And then bam, straight away, we’re into another frying pan, which is fantastic.”

In the meantime, Zoë Tapper from the series Cleo shared her thoughts: “I sense that Sandy will persist in some shape or form, and indeed, she’ll continue to exist through Bruno.

As a cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the profound impact of our protagonist’s trauma. His loss of his mother is palpable, and it’s our responsibility to honor her memory and navigate him through this difficult journey. We owe it to him to keep his mother’s spirit alive on screen.

Indeed, it seems Sandy isn’t present physically, but her impact will undoubtedly be lasting and significant throughout their lives, as far as I can see.

Simm agreed that “what happened to Sandy continues to resonate,” expressing that it will play a significant role in numerous upcoming stories as we uncover more about her past and the truth behind her circumstances.

“That is certainly not over,” he said. “There’s a lot to unravel about that.”

Peter James, creator of the Grace novels, confirmed: “John, you’re correct! In fact, even in the 20th book, One of Us Is Dead, there are lingering effects. One of my most cherished scenes I’ve penned revolves around a character named Sandy.

Absolutely, when the cast discuss the lasting impacts they’re not only referring to seasons 5-6, as both seasons have already been confirmed, implying that there will be numerous more mysteries for Roy and Glenn to unravel in Brighton beyond these seasons.
