Saoirse Ronan Shares Her Take to Ryan Gosling's Lovely Bones Firing

As a dedicated follower of Saoirse Ronan‘s illustrious career, I can confidently say that her experiences with Hollywood’s elite have been as captivating as her performances on screen. The tale of her time working alongside Ryan Gosling is one I hold dear in my heart, even if it was brief.

Saoirse Ronan had a lovely time working with Ryan Gosling, however brief.

Actress Saoirse Ronan, who was a star in the movie “Lady Bird,” reminisced about the turmoil that erupted during the production of her 2009 film “The Lovely Bones.” Director Peter Jackson unexpectedly dismissed Ryan from the cast due to disagreements over the character’s portrayal. Interestingly, Ryan had gained 60 pounds to play the father role in the movie, but was ultimately replaced by Mark Wahlberg.

Saoirse disclosed that even though the production hadn’t started at the time Ryan lost his role in the movie, they had developed a connection and completed some preliminary work together prior to shooting. Regardless, this decision proved challenging to accept.

She shared with Josh Horowitz on the October 7th episode of his “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast that she deeply cared for Ryan and his dog, George. However, she felt sad because they wouldn’t be around anymore. Despite this, she believes the reasons behind their separation were entirely justifiable, as she has since spoken to both Ryan and Peter.

14-year-old Saoirse clarified that upheavals during casting are fairly typical within the film industry, implying that the change wasn’t intended as a personal criticism of Ryan.

She commented, “Sometimes things just happen, if you catch my drift? It’s not about personal issues; it’s more like we don’t always see things eye to eye.

In the end, Mark—who has children Ella, 21, Michael, 18, Brendan, 16, and Grace, 14 together with his wife Rhea Durham—brought a genuine, real-life fatherly touch to the character of Susie’s dad in Saoirse’s role that Ryan lacked at the time. (Note: The star of La La Land is currently a father to two daughters, Esmeralda Amada, 10, and Amada Lee, 8, with his long-term partner Eva Mendes.)

As I clarified, Mark found himself stepping into the role of a parent at that point, caring for not one but three children. In contrast, Ryan may have felt that he lacked the prior experience Mark brought to the table as a father figure.

She added, “Ryan was like 27. He was young.”

In the end, Mark, who has children Ella (21 years old), Michael (18 years old), Brendan (16 years old), and Grace (14 years old) with his wife Rhea Durham, brought authentic real-life fatherly experience to the character of Susie’s father in the movie, which Ryan Gosling lacked at that time. (It is worth noting that the star of La La Land is now a father to daughters Esmeralda Amada (10 years old) and Amada Lee (8 years old) with his long-term partner Eva Mendes.)

In other words, Saoirse said, “Mark took on the role of a parent at that point, while Ryan may not have had such an experience.” At the time, Mark was caring for three children, which might have been different from what Ryan had gone through.

She added, “Ryan was like 27. He was young.”

Five years after their first encounter, fortunately for Saoirse, the opportunity arose for her to collaborate with Ryan on his 2014 directorial debut, “Lost River.

“It was great then to work with him later,” she gushed. “He’s just the same. He doesn’t change.”

In 2010, Ryan discussed the challenges he faced during the casting process for “The Lovely Bones,” which came a year after the movie’s release. He attributed these issues to a misunderstanding about the role on his part.

He shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he held a distinct vision for the character’s appearance. Specifically, he felt strongly that the character should weigh around 210 pounds.

During the pre-production phase, our communication was quite limited, which turned out to be an issue for us. Given the magnitude of the project, there were numerous aspects to handle, and it seemed challenging for him to provide individual attention to the actors. Upon arriving on set, I realized I had made some mistakes.
