With news about the comeback of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” now public knowledge, Sarah Michelle Gellar has spoken directly to fans on Instagram. She’s set to reprise her character, Buffy Summers, and instead of rebooting the storyline, she plans to pick it up from where it left off. Previously, Gellar had expressed reluctance about returning to this series, believing that its original ending was perfect as it stood. Now, she’s reassured fans that her change of heart comes from the potential for a fresh, engaging narrative. She also acknowledged the strong desire among fans for more Buffy on screen and hoped that this revival would meet their expectations. At present, the revival only has a pilot order, but there seems to be much anticipation for a full-fledged series.
To start off, you may have missed my updates this week, but let me catch you up,” Gellar started. She went on to share how the project came about – producer Gail Berman convinced her for a meeting with renowned filmmaker Chloé Zhao, who was eager to discuss her Buffy concept. Gellar confessed that she was thrilled at the prospect of collaborating with Zhao, yet harbored reservations about the notion of a Buffy reboot.
Gellar expressed to Gail that it seemed impossible for the show to come back. Although we’d both felt the same way before, this time I sensed a new tone in her voice, she wrote. They found common ground and a fellow enthusiast in Zhao, and decided to delve deeper into the idea. She elaborated, “These discussions persisted for several years, and eventually we welcomed Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to our small group. Eventually, after much brainstorming, we finally came up with an idea.
Sarah Michelle Gellar expressed that she’s been attentive to fan requests to revisit Buffy and her universe, but it wasn’t feasible unless they were certain they could execute it perfectly. She emphasized that the process has been lengthy, and it’s not complete yet. However, she guaranteed the project will only move forward if they are confident they can get it right. Moreover, she shared that they are making progress and are on the right track. She expressed gratitude to the fans who have consistently asked for this revival, as it will be made with love, just like how she, her co-stars, and fans cherish Buffy.
The revival of the beloved series “Buffy” is under development, but it hasn’t received a full greenlight as a series just yet. For now, you can catch up on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and its spin-off “Angel” by streaming them both on Hulu.
