Housemarque’s upcoming game is titled Saros, marking their largest production project to date.
In an interview with Helsingin Sanomat (which requires a subscription), the CEO of the development company, Ilari Kuittinen, discussed their forthcoming project. He emphasized that this project is made achievable due to Sony’s purchase of our firm.
According to Kuittinen, although the buyout influenced the way the company functions somewhat, the most notable change is a substantial boost in financial assets, enabling Housemarque to produce Saros with a far more expansive budget compared to their earlier games.
He notes that the cost of the game is approximately equal to the projected budget for Alan Wake 2, which is roughly 70 million euros.
The budget for the team’s previous game, Returnal, isn’t clear, but it seems reasonable to assume it was less than some other projects due to Sony acquiring the studio after its release. As a PlayStation Studios title, Returnal would have received funding from Sony, its publisher.
At any rate, it seems Saros will be Housemarque’s biggest project to date.
The new game shares many aspects with Returnal, even though it isn’t a direct sequel; it falls under the genre of sci-fi third-person shooters, incorporating elements of roguelikes, but with an emphasis on lasting upgrades and opportunities to gradually increase power, which makes it more like a roguelite. This suggests that it won’t be as demanding compared to its predecessor.
2026 will see the release of the game on PlayStation 5, featuring upgrades specifically designed for the PS5 Pro. Expect to hear more details about it soon. Can’t wait for Saros? Start sharing your excitement and prepare yourself for a storm of bullets in the comments section below.
