As a fervent admirer of Sasha Calle, I find her journey in the DC Universe to be nothing short of inspiring. Her resilience and grace under fire, particularly in the face of fan backlash and sudden changes in franchise plans, is truly commendable.

Sasha Calle’s tenure in the DC Universe may have been short-lived, but many fans considered it impactful. Indeed, Calle herself concurs with this viewpoint. In a recent interview, the actress candidly discussed her challenging journey to secure the role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, the harsh reactions from DC fans, and the unexpected shift in the franchise’s direction that saw her transition from a significant arc across numerous DC projects, to merely appearing in one.

Calle shared with THR, “It was incredibly painful and puzzling for me. In the end, I believe I gave it my all. It was suggested that a Latina lesbian couldn’t embody Supergirl. However, I did, and no one can undo that. What matters most to me is that I accomplished something significant. Whether people saw themselves reflected in me or not, many connected with her and cherished her.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, “The Flash” delves into Barry Allen’s (the Flash) journey through the Speed Force, where he attempts to rescue his mother, Nora, from a grim fate. This singular act set off a ripple effect, altering the course of history for every member of the Justice League. For instance, Kal-El, who was intended to reach Earth as baby Superman, met an untimely end at the hands of General Zod during transit. Instead, it was Kara who arrived on our planet, only to be captured by Cadmus.

For Callie, there was an equal amount of drama to manage behind the scenes: The actor Ezra Miller, known for playing Flash, found themselves entangled in controversy (and serious allegations) prior to the film’s premiere; shortly after Flash was released in June of 2023, the entire DC Extended Universe (DCEU) under director Zack Snyder ceased to exist as James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as heads of DC Studios, planning a fresh start for a new DC Universe franchise. This development occurred alongside Callie’s loss of her friend and potential collaborator in the upcoming DCEU, actress Leslie Grace, who was cast as Batgirl but saw her solo movie cancelled following the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery. Initially, there had been much speculation that Flash would culminate in a timeline reset, which would have officially replaced veterans like Henry Cavill (Superman) and Ben Affleck (Batman) with newcomers such as Callie (Supergirl) and Grace (Batgirl) in the rebooted universe.

That scenario excited many fans who hoped to see two Latina actresses become the new iconic duo of DC’s film franchise – and, not surprisingly, angered just as many fans who didn’t agree with the proposed changes. For Calle, it wasn’t just the possibility of teaming up with Leslie Grace’s Batgirl onscreen: the two actresses bonded over weathering the storm of hate and vitriol they both got after being cast:

As a cinephile, let me confess, I’d be lost without Leslie. Frankly, she endured more than most, yet she was this radiant beacon of love and compassion. From a complex and distressing scenario, we forged an authentic, heartfelt friendship. We stood by each other during those challenging times, and I am overjoyed that we were there for one another. Truly, I’m grateful for the bond we shared.

Calle summed up the situation, admitting it was quite challenging. There was a mix of joy and uncertainty as I navigated through everything, he said. Essentially, I felt both elated and puzzled due to unresolved doubts.

The DCU franchise has recently cast Milly Alcock, who appeared in House of the Dragon, to portray Supergirl in her standalone movie adaptation based on the critically acclaimed comic miniseries titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This project is currently underway. You can watch The Flash on Max.
