Sasha Obama’s Secret Life After the White House: You Won’t Believe What She’s Doing Now

Sasha Obama was 7 years old when she moved into the White House.

Of course, it’s not surprising that the Internet often reacts excessively when the 23-year-old flaunts her waistline.

Despite Sasha and her sister Malia Obama, aged 26, having lived much of their lives under public scrutiny due to their parents’ attempts to shield them from media limelight, it was still surprising to witness the transition from small children entering 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and young women departing. As Michelle Obama, their mother, admitted recently, “It was a lot of work.

The former first lady expressed to Oprah Winfrey during her 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus tour that she advises her children to “find their own path and live it independently.

Just like any other parents, Barack Obama and his wife find it hard to accept that their daughters are grown-ups, regardless of their age. However, so far, the Obama girls have consistently impressed their parents with their achievements at every step they’ve taken.

Michelle mused, “It’s been thrilling to see those two young ones you looked after develop,” as she pondered in the Netflix documentary Becoming, a film that showcased significant moments in her life and the impact she made during her 2018-19 book tour, promoting her memoir bearing the same title.

In a rare interview, Sasha expressed her eagerness for her mother to feel pride in her accomplishments because, in her opinion, self-pride is the most significant achievement for any human.

Malia noted that no longer dealing with the same level of criticism allows for a significant mental relief, creating a vast expanse in one’s thoughts.

The same could be said for the sisters themselves.

During the conclusion of President Obama’s two-term presidency in January 2017, Malia was already into her gap year before attending Harvard University. However, Sasha, who had become the youngest first child to reside at the White House since a 2-month-old John F. Kennedy Jr., was yet to reach her 16th birthday and still had a couple of years of high school left. This was the primary reason why the family chose to stay in Washington D.C.

The Obamas leased an 8,200-square-foot residence in the Kalorama area, close to Dupont Circle, and threw a lavish party for Sasha that May. This event was exclusive, but there were still photos circulating of the birthday girl wearing a red dress by Jill Stuart.

It’s more appropriate to attribute the frequent social media posting by teenagers to their inclination rather than their physical incapacity, as demonstrated by a 2020 TikTok video where Sasha and her friend lip-synced to Moneybagg Yo’s “Said Sum” remix featuring City Girls. This video was swiftly removed, but not before it gained traction following a proud tweet from rapper JT, propelling it to go viral globally.

Even though life for Sasha and Malia isn’t exactly the same as what most people consider ‘normal’ after their father ceased being president, they still have a security detail present in their daily routines and continue to be under public scrutiny. The world still takes great interest in their achievements, aspirations, and dreams, while also eagerly lapping up any gossip-worthy tidbits about them if they should ever choose to share any.

To this point, those expecting some sort of scandal have found themselves consistently let down. In truth, they weren’t only under constant scrutiny by the Secret Service throughout their influential eight-year term in Washington D.C., but also, it seems, by an unspoken guardianship of some kind.

On weekends, it was tough for Michelle as she had to keep track of these young girls, ensuring they weren’t attending parties with alcohol and identifying their parents. Every weekend presented a challenge for her.

As their stay neared its end, it was then that the first lady found herself pondering over making their grand White House dwelling, adorned with tuxedo-clad butlers, a significant number of whom were African American and Latinx individuals, feel more homely.

During her last stop on her 34-city “Becoming” book tour, Michelle explained to Stephen Colbert why it was necessary to adjust the dress code. She didn’t want Malia and Sasha or their friends to think that having liveried staff was commonplace. She said, “It’s not appropriate for everyday wear. The girls would have pool parties, play dates, and other gatherings with friends, and it just doesn’t seem right. I had to ask the housekeepers to help the girls learn to clean their own rooms, make their beds, and do their laundry. They won’t live here forever, and I’m not raising children who don’t know how to perform basic household chores.

When the family got Bo and Sunny, their Portuguese water dogs, taking care of these first pets became an additional task on the girls’ duty list.

Michelle stated on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2022 that she was not merely raising children but shaping future adults for the world. Given her awareness that her husband’s presidency was temporary, but being Malia and Sasha’s mother was a permanent role, she focused on teaching them essential life skills like making beds, driving, and becoming compassionate, independent, responsible individuals. As a result, she believes they have turned into remarkable young women who can navigate the world confidently and with empathy.

In 2019, Sasha completed her education at Sidwell Friends School, an esteemed institution with notable alumni such as Malia Obama, Chelsea Clinton, and Al Gore III. Following a summer filled with a family trip to the French Riviera, she prepared for her next adventure – enrollment at the University of Michigan.

Jessica Brinser, a Michigan sophomore at the time, expressed her admiration to the Detroit News in August 2019 about her impressive new fellow Wolverine on move-in day. She stated, “It’s remarkable that despite her family attending Ivy League institutions, she chose UM as a suitable match for those prestigious schools. We hope she feels at home here, just like we all have. We all cherish this place and hope she does, too.

In a similar fashion, Sasha’s parents assisted with moving her into her college dorm, much like they transported boxes and bedding for Malia when they took her to Harvard in 2017.

And, once again, there were some tears.

Michelle shared with Jenna Bush Hager on Today in December 2019 that we were particularly careful about it. She explained that, knowing she had roommates, we didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable, so we decided to bid our farewell to her in the afternoon, after lunch.

When Barack, Malia, and I climbed into the car together, it was just the four of us. Then, Sasha decided to go on her own way and bid us a final farewell. At that moment, we couldn’t help but feel emotional. [She then mimicked sobbing noises.]

In 2017, Jenna and her sibling, named Barbara, penned a note of congratulations and inspiration for Malia and Sasha, acknowledging their transition into the group known as “the alumni of First Children.

The twins suggested, “Savor college! Like many others, we did, and so should you. You’ll find the burden of the world no longer on your shoulders. Delve into what stirs your soul. Discover who you truly are. Embrace errors – they’re part of the journey. Cherish friends who stand by you, appreciate you, and defend you fiercely. Those who criticize you don’t care for you deeply, so let their opinions slide. Instead, trust in yourself.

In a chat with Entertainment Tonight in May 2017, Michelle playfully mentioned that she was considering buying an apartment near their college campus and dropping in on their classes. However, she added humorously that this was just an empty threat. She expressed her happiness to see them flourishing at the university, taking up work-study jobs, traveling, and having a wealth of independent experiences that would mold them into extraordinary individuals.

Nor did being in college stop the reminder texts from Mom.

Michelle shared with Oprah an instance of the guidance she often gives her children, saying something like, “Have you ever been reminded by me to keep track of things, such as eating your greens?” She humorously acknowledged, “Boy, I think I give them so much advice that they’re probably tired of hearing from me.

But maybe that gave the Obama sisters just one more thing to bond over.

Instead, let me rephrase it like this: For her final year of studies, Sasha decided to enroll at the University of Southern California, as Malia, her friend, relocated to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams in writing and directing. It was at USC where Sasha earned her sociology degree in 2023.

Nevertheless, it was noteworthy that several guests at the ceremony appeared taken aback when “Natasha Obama” was listed among the graduates at USC’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and discovered they were sitting in proximity to the former president and first lady.

In the year 2022, Michelle shared with Ellen DeGeneres that her two daughters, who are based in Los Angeles, have blossomed remarkably, thriving quite well. She pointed out that they both have significant others and active lives of their own.

Michelle, the current host of the podcast titled “IMO” alongside her brother Craig Robinson, has been quite open about her personal journey as she ponders what lies ahead in the upcoming phase of her life – a journey that undoubtedly continues to involve her husband of 32 years.

The 61-year-old made it clear on the April 30 episode of the Diary of a CEO podcast that if she were facing issues with her husband, they’d be openly visible to everyone. She emphasized that both her husband and the public would be well aware of it. She clarified, “I’m not someone who suffers in silence or acts like a martyr. I’d tackle the problems publicly, and I’d make sure to share what he did.

Regarding her daughters, Michelle eagerly anticipates seeing what lies ahead for them, yet has expressed that she and their father prefer not to exert significant influence on their choices.

Michelle shared with Oprah in 2020 that she and Barack have encouraged their daughters to discover their own identities, rather than basing it on others or family members, such as themselves or their father. She emphasized the importance of self-reflection for the girls: they should take the time to understand who they truly are and what they aspire to be in the world, not conforming to expectations set by others or societal norms, but shaping their lives according to their own desires and ambitions.

I prefer they don’t base their self-worth on outside factors, but for young girls, it can be quite challenging to avoid this.

In her interview on Today, she expressed her enthusiasm for her daughters growing up and achieving independence. However, she also mentioned feeling a bit wistful because they would no longer be the little girls who used to sit on her lap or hang onto her every word with adoration. Those times, she said, are now behind her.

But as a recent pic of Malia and Sasha hanging out together proves, they’ve still got each other.

Following a break from studies, Malia is now relishing her time at esteemed Harvard University during her college years. Meanwhile, Sasha has joined the University of Michigan as a student.
