Sass’s Long-Awaited Romance Ends the Virginity Joke in Ghosts!

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Ghosts season 4, episode 21, “Kyle.”

In the future episodes of “Ghosts”, it seems that Sasappis will need to come up with a new running gag as his character trait of being a 400-year-old virgin is no longer applicable, given the events of season 4, episode 21. Sass, who is one of the oldest ghosts in CBS’ “Ghosts”, remains an enigma, with details about his death still unknown. However, he possesses one of the most fascinating abilities among the spirits at Woodstone Manor: the capacity to enter people’s dreams and communicate directly with Jay, effectively allowing him to ‘journey’ in a unique manner.

Sass views himself as a narrator, frequently standing aside while other spirits’ tales unfold, occasionally adding a witty remark. He’s had a few romantic endeavors, such as the crush he expressed through Jay’s dreams in Ghosts season 4, episode 5, or his unspoken feelings for Shiki, who was alive and then became a ghost in the afterlife. However, it appears that Woodstone’s indigenous Lenape spirit might be experiencing a change, although I can’t help but worry that his joy may not last long.

Ghosts Has Used Sass’s Lack Of Sexual Experience As A Punchline For Years

Every Ghost Makes Jokes At Sass’s Expense, Which Is Frustrating And Mean

In the 8th episode of season 4 in the TV show “Ghosts,” Thor breaches Sass’s confidence by revealing to Flower that he died a virgin. This incident became a persistent, exasperating joke in the series, often involving Flower due to her frequent drugged state, although it’s challenging to stay angry with her. However, every character has made a jibe about Sass’s lack of dating history. It’s been established that these jokes upset Sass, which gives the recurring gag a sour and tired feeling.

In the fourth season of “Ghosts”, Pete had pledged to utilize his power of roaming to help Sass find a suitable partner earlier on. However, it wasn’t until episode 17 that Joan, a screenwriting lady from the 1940s, was introduced. In the same season, Sass found himself torn between Joan and Shiki in episode 17. Fortunately for Sass, he selected the individual who appreciated him for who he truly is, rather than a ghost from his past who wanted him to be something other than what he really is.

Main Ghosts Ghost Characters & Their Relationship Statuses
Character Period/Occupation Relationship Status
Thorfinn Viking In a relationship with Flower. Thor’s last two girlfriends were sucked off.
Sasappis Lenape Native American (1500s) Currently in a relationship with Joan. Loved Shiki from afar when he was alive. Previously in a relationship with Jessica, a ghost bound to a car. Was a virgin for 500+ years.
Isaac Higgintoot Revolutionary War captain Previously engaged to British solider Nigel Chessum but called off the wedding because of his attraction to Chris.
Henrietta “Hetty” Woodstone Gilded Age socialite & Lady of the Manor Used to be in a secretive on-again, off-again relationship with Trevor. Had a date with Jay’s living cousin Sunil.
Alberta Haynes Prohibition lounge singer Single. Used to be in a relationship with a poltergeist bound to a B+B guest. Suddenly attracted to “bad boy” Pete.
Flower Hippie In a relationship with Thor.
Pete Martino Travel agent & Pinecone Troop leader In a relationship with a St. Lucia ghost, Donna. Formerly had an unrequited crush on Alberta.
Trevor Lefkowitz Stockbroker Used to be in a casual relationship with Hetty. Had a thing with Jay’s living sister.

Although the spirits are constantly interfering in each other’s affairs, the ongoing gossip about Sass’s virginity was becoming tiresome, even for Nancy, one of the basement dwellers. Intrusively, Nancy interrupts Sass and Joan to share that a wager is on regarding when the event will take place. Many spirits have experienced personal growth, such as Pete witnessing his daughter’s wedding, but Sass has not shown much development in terms of character complexity or background. It’s uplifting to observe Sass forming a sincere bond with Joan.

Sass’s First Time With Joan Means Ghosts Can No Longer Use The Same Joke Moving Forward

Thor And Trevor Give Sass Some Bad Advice Before Sass’s First Time

When Joan mentions that tonight might be a significant event for Sass, Trevor, Thor, and Flower unintentionally agitate Sass by putting excessive expectations on his performance. Thor demonstrates a technique he’s confident in to Sass: aggressively lifting her up and throwing her onto the bed. Unfortunately, on that particular night, Sass attempts to replicate Thor’s move but ends up going too far, instead of placing Joan gently on the bed, he throws her out of a second-story window, an unintentional breach of the rules regarding furniture due to his hysterical state.

In this latest installment, I firmly believe that Joan is the ideal pick for Sass. She comforts a disheartened Sass, emphasizing that there’s no rush if he feels unprepared. When Sass expresses his eagerness, Joan offers priceless guidance for both screenwriting and intimate moments: avoid mimicking others, instead, embrace your authentic self. Later on, all it takes is a simple “Oh yeah” from Sass to spark an exhilarating applause in the living room, evoking memories of the climax in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Since Joan has become intimate with Sasappis, the spirits may need to discover a new subject for their humor, as Sass’s tragic demise now appears more heartbreaking rather than amusing, resembling Hetty’s fate more closely than Pete’s. However, with Joan in his spiritual realm, Sass’s future seems brighter compared to his past experiences.

Will Sass & Joan Actually Last As A Couple in Ghosts?

One Joan Line Suggests She Might Get Bored At Woodstone Manor No Matter Her Feelings For Sass

As a movie critic, I must say that not every secondary character in “Ghosts” stays put, such as Chris’ brief stint as a ghost before jetting off to Australia. It seems that the enchanting allure of Woodstone Manor might not be enough to keep Joan around indefinitely. In this latest episode, Sass exuberantly shows Joan a tree branch teetering on the edge of becoming “one fat squirrel” away from falling, while Joan casually mentions she was at The Parthenon in Greece just last week. This subtle hint makes me wonder if Joan may eventually cause heartbreak for Sass by giving into her wanderlust during season 5 of “Ghosts.

On Thursdays at 8:30 PM Eastern Time, you can catch new episodes of the series titled “Ghosts“. A day later, these episodes are available for streaming on Paramount+. The 22nd episode of Season 4, entitled “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone,” is set to air on May 8, 2025.
