Saturday Night Live: 1970s Movie Cast Gets First Look

As a lifelong fan who grew up laughing along with the original Saturday Night Live cast, I can hardly contain my excitement for this upcoming film. Having lived through the golden age of SNL, I remember the iconic moments and legendary comedians that made Studio 8H a household name. Seeing these familiar faces recreate those magic moments is like stepping back in time, and I’m eager to witness the authenticity that director Jason Reitman promises.

The latest glimpse into the movie about Saturday Night Live took viewers on a trip down memory lane with its cast reminiscent of 1975. Vanity Fair had an exclusive interview with Jason Reitman, discussing the upcoming SNL film. With so many actors involved in this time-traveling project, it’s like a reunion of familiar faces. Stars such as Dylan O’Brien, Lamorne Morris, Emily Fair, Cory Michael Smith, Matt Wood, Ella Hunt, and Kim Matula are all portraying legendary comedians who graced Studio 8H. Iconic names like John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Garrett Morris, Chevy Chase, Laraine Newman, and Jane Curtin are being brought to life by these actors. Notably, Gabriel LaBelle will be the one breathing life into Lorne Michaels’ character as well.

In the story, we encounter Lorne while he’s in the process of being molded. He exhibits extraordinary intelligence and possesses a vision that surpasses everyone else present, not just his contemporaries. This is quite a burden for an actor, as Reitman points out. In this film, however, every character gets to have fun, except for Gabe who serves as the rhythmic anchor.

As a passionate gamer, I must say that the immersion in this game is astounding. Every detail has been carefully crafted to mirror reality as closely as possible. I was fortunate enough to speak with everyone who was still alive from the grand opening, including cast members, writers, artists, costume designers, makeup artists, NBC pages, and even members of Billy Preston’s band. We left no stone unturned in our pursuit of authenticity.

Did Everyone Make It In?

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to admit it’s a bummer that Bill Murray isn’t featured in Saturday Night. Contrary to popular belief, the legendary actor joined the scene during Season 2, following Chevy Chase’s departure. In an interview with ET earlier this year, Murray shared an unusual twist: he chose an unorthodox portrayal for himself on the show.

Murray chuckled, admitting, “I’m not sure about this, but among those who followed in my footsteps, I believe I would most enjoy seeing… Kenan Thompson might capture my essence well. Or, it could be Bill Hader, those two are possibilities. Similarly, Kristen Wiig or Amy Pohler could do a great job portraying me.”

As a fan, I can tell you that Jason Reitman has been grilling me about my SNL days since he was just starting out, and he’s learned quite a bit from me in the process. He’s sharp, knowledgeable, and a skilled director – it’s a privilege to see this movie focusing on the original six or seven cast members. I get to watch from the sidelines, and even better, my name will be mentioned, which is always a good thing!
