Saturday Night Live: Adam Sandler Makes Surprise Appearance in Chris Rock Episode

As someone who has grown up watching Saturday Night Live (SNL) since its early days, I must say that witnessing Adam Sandler and Chris Rock collaborate once again was like stepping into a time machine. Their camaraderie, honed over years of shared experience, shone through in their sketch about a botched gallbladder surgery.

On the weekend, former Saturday Night Live star Adam Sandler unexpectedly joined the show when Chris Rock was hosting. In a skit titled “Gallbladder Surgery,” they both featured, but there seemed to be some prop malfunctions. However, these glitches appeared to enhance the humor based on the audience’s reaction.

In this rephrased version, the main character Rock portrayed a surgeon dealing with an underperforming team in a sketch. Sarah Sherman assumed the role of Lizley, a nurse who was both inept and dependent, whose errors led to a disastrous operation. However, it was Lizley who took a step back around midway through the scene when the patient, played by Sandler, miraculously woke up. Bleeding profusely and near death, Sandler scolded the staff for their behavior towards each other and delivered some harsh realities regarding their positions in the operating room.

The problems arose approximately at the 2 minute, 45 second point, when it seemed like Sandler accidentally dropped the device he was using to splatter fake blood onto other performers. He required Sherman’s assistance to pick it up, and during this process, he inadvertently sprayed blood onto her face. Subsequently, he executed a prearranged joke by spraying fake blood onto the doctors, nurses, and the rest of the set.

Sandler and Rock handled everything calmly, given their extensive experience on SNL from the 1990s. It’s fitting that they performed a nostalgic sketch together this season, especially since SNL is currently marking its 50th anniversary. Interestingly, Sandler even slipped in some self-referential humor towards the newer cast members, teasing Emil Wakim: “I’m not quite sure what your part is in this skit, but I’m thrilled you’re getting a chance to shine. Good luck! May your parents be proud of you.

This season, the show has been focusing more on nostalgia and bringing back former cast members. For example, Dana Carvey has appeared several times, including his character “The Church Lady” last week. David Spade has also made a recent appearance, while Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer have returned to film a couple of Lonely Island-inspired pre-recorded sketches. Some viewers are enjoying these throwbacks, but others are questioning if this means the best days of SNL are over.

In summary, Rock’s hosting stint this weekend received a mix of feedback online, but Sandler’s appearance was widely praised as a standout moment. Several sketches from the show can already be found on YouTube and various social media platforms, while the entire episode is currently streaming on Peacock. Tune in next week as SNL welcomes host Martin Short and musical guest Hozier.
