As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Saturday Night Live (SNL) sketches, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and curiosity upon hearing about Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney’s departures from the iconic comedy series.
As a longtime fan of Saturday Night Live (SNL), I have always admired the comedic talents that grace the stage each week, bringing laughter and entertainment to millions. However, as someone who has spent years in the industry myself, I can empathize with Punkie Johnson’s decision to leave the show after four seasons.
As a gamer, I shared my concerns with my team: “Guys, I’m not sure if I’m in the right spot here at work, so maybe it’s time for me to move on.” Johnson shared that they responded by saying, “Hold up. You need a strategy before you make any decisions. Quitting your job isn’t something you can do without a plan.”
Johnson shared that the initial portion of Season 49 turned out exceptionally well for her, as she was given three to four sketches during the first half, which is more than the usual two or three she receives in an entire season. However, things took a turn when Ben Silva, her writer, departed from SNL, because he “had a knack for writing in Punkie’s style”.
She mentioned, “When I was sharing something with him, he had a knack for transforming it into a skit-like structure that I understood,” she explained. “On the other hand, creating it in the SNL style is actually the challenging part.”
Johnson further elaborated that she simply didn’t seem to gel with the show as a whole, and she perceived Saturday Night Live as catering more to a distinctly different kind of individual.
She expressed that she didn’t seem to belong or feel comfortable, as if the environment wasn’t suited to her. She remarked that the show caters to a different kind of person. Since she’s from stand-up comedy, she initially assumed everyone else was too. However, when she started talking to people, she found out many had educational backgrounds in this field, which surprised her.
Initially, Johnson became a part of the Saturday Night Live team in 2020. More recently, she revealed her decision to leave during a comedy performance at Brooklyn’s Union Hall. In a subsequent social media statement, she emphasized that there was no hard feelings involved.
After spending four seasons on Saturday Night Live, Johnson announced that he won’t be there for the 50th season. He emphasized that there is no animosity, no burnt bridges, and no ill feelings. Essentially, he expressed his love for his fellow cast members and didn’t expect this decision to cause a stir.
“Joining SNL was a dream I never knew I could attain. It placed me among the comedy world’s top echelons, and I am eternally grateful for that experience. Those people will always hold a special place in my heart; they are truly amazing! You can expect to see me cutting loose at the after-parties! My chapter with this incredible institution has come to a close, but don’t worry, Punkie is here now – so enjoy the show!”
Molly Kearny is Also Not Returning for Season 50
Apart from Johnson, another cast member, Molly Kearny, won’t be returning for Season 50 of Saturday Night Live. Kearny, who made history as the first non-binary cast member on the show, announced earlier this month that they won’t be part of next season.
As a long-time fan of Saturday Night Live (SNL), I have always admired the comedic talent and camaraderie that the show exudes. So when Kearney announced their departure from SNL, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for the incredible two seasons they graced us with their humor. It was truly a dream come true for Kearney to be a part of such an iconic comedy institution, and I can only imagine how grateful they must have been for this period in their life.
Season 50 of Saturday Night Live is set to premiere on September 28th.
