Saturday Night Live: Steve Martin Declined Offer to Play Tim Walz in Season 50

As a long-time fan of Saturday Night Live who has witnessed its evolution and the incredible performances of iconic comedians over the years, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia upon hearing that Steve Martin turned down the offer to play Tim Walz. It would have been an absolute treat to see him grace the SNL stage once more, especially given his past successes and the show’s penchant for political lampooning.

It’s expected that Governor Tim Walz will have a significant role in this season of Saturday Night Live due to its focus on political satire. Recently, it was confirmed that Maya Rudolph will reprise her role as Kamala Harris, and the producers are reportedly searching for an actor to play Walz, who is Harris’ running mate on the Democratic ticket. However, one highly speculated choice for the part has declined the offer. This week, Steve Martin announced that he won’t be taking up the role of Walz.

On Wednesday, Martin conveyed to the Los Angeles Times that he initially wanted to decline and added a side note, “By the way, he wanted me to say no.” However, in our conversation, he expressed, “Lorne, I’m not an impersonator. You need someone who can truly emulate the person.” He was selected for the role because of his gray hair and glasses.

In simpler terms, the well-known comedian mentioned that the part demanded a lot more commitment than he’s willing or able to give at this stage of his professional life.

Martin continued, “It continues, not a one-time thing where you receive accolades and then move on. It requires a skilled impressionist for such tasks. They’ll surely discover an exceptionally talented individual. Frankly, I’d find it challenging myself.”
