Satya Nadella says Microsoft makes money every time you use ChatGPT: “Every day that ChatGPT succeeds is a fantastic day”

Over the last several months, it seems that the collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI, worth billions, has been showing signs of strain. Both entities appear to be working towards reducing their dependence on one another for future AI technologies, financing, and computational resources.

As a dedicated follower of tech news, I can’t help but wonder where the once-strong “tech bromance” between the giants might lead. Recently, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, has shed some light on the situation, stating that their partnership is indeed evolving and transforming, yet it continues to stand firm (as reported by Bloomberg).

Speaking to The Circuit’s Emily Chang, Nadella indicated:

For any firm that evolved from a research facility into a highly prosperous product company during this era, it’s evident that adaptations are necessary not only for them but also for us, given our collaboration.

There have been various indications hinting at potential tension between Microsoft and OpenAI, some even predicting a possible future rift worth approximately $13.5 billion, looking back from a hindsight perspective.

A significant part of this development could be linked to OpenAI’s ambitious Stargate project, valued at approximately $500 billion, which aims to build data centers nationwide in the U.S., thereby supporting the growth of their AI technologies like ChatGPT.

At approximately the same period, Microsoft no longer held exclusive cloud services for OpenAI, yet it preserved the ability to decline future offers. Previously, OpenAI had voiced concerns about Microsoft’s computational capabilities not fulfilling its requirements, and it perceived a decline in its position on the cutting-edge Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) scale.

It was found in a different document that Microsoft canceled agreements for two large data centers due to their reluctance to offer extra assistance with the training of ChatGPT. Notably, Sam Altman suggested that OpenAI is now free from computational limitations.

Although there has been some back-and-forth, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadellas expresses enthusiasm over the prospect of utilizing OpenAI’s technology. “We are genuinely excited about this potential collaboration,” he suggested. “After all, why would any of us want to disrupt such a promising partnership?

In contrast to Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff’s prediction that Microsoft may not continue using OpenAI in the future due to its high costs and slow performance not meeting consumer demands, Microsoft’s CEO has a distinct vision for their partnership with OpenAI. He envisions a long-term relationship with OpenAI, aiming to collaborate in multiple areas over several decades, even though there is an ongoing project called Stargate.

Satya Nadellar hints at future collaborations between OpenAI and other entities. Notably, the creators of ChatGPT are currently teaming up with SoftBank and Oracle to boost their AI capabilities. As Sam Altman mentioned in a previous episode of The Circuit, while Microsoft is a significant partner for OpenAI, he believes that such groundbreaking work may surpass what a single company can accomplish.

In summary, Satya Nadellas, Microsoft’s CEO, expressed satisfaction with OpenAIs business model as the AI lab primarily obtains its computational resources from Microsoft.
