Craig Melvin is holding down the Today fort with the help of a familiar face.
On the fourth day of Melvin’s tenure as the official co-host on the NBC morning show, Savannah Guthrie was conspicuously missing. Melvin started off the Jan. 16 broadcast by explaining why his colleague was taking a day off so early into his role as Hoda Kotb’s replacement at the news desk. This absence was quite understandable for reasons that Melvin shared during the broadcast.
Hello and welcome to Today! It’s great having you join us during this bustling Thursday morning,” the 45-year-old expressed to the audience. “Laura Jarrett is here, while Savannah isn’t feeling quite well today.
Absolutely, Melvin didn’t nurse any resentment against Guthrie because she chose to rest at home while dealing with a private health issue.
He playfully commented, “That’s probably the thought crossing your mind – that, having been with Craig for three days, she opted to leave.
Jarrett hilariously replied, “I wasn’t going to say it…But it’s nice to be with you.”
Yesterday, I learned that my fellow anchor, Sheinelle Jones, has decided to take a break from our morning show for personal reasons that continue to unfold. Coincidentally, Guthrie was also off sick the very next day. This turn of events has made us all in the team deeply aware of the importance of prioritizing our well-being and personal lives over professional commitments.
Greetings everyone, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for those who reached out while I was away from the show,” the co-anchor stated in a January 15 Instagram post. “I am taking some time off to address a personal family health issue. I can’t help but feel grateful for not only the support of my Today Show colleagues, but also for each one of you. Your compassion truly touches me. Can’t wait to reunite with you soon.
During the initial phase of Melvin assuming his enlarged role on Today, he was greeted warmly by Guthrie to start the week, and received an exceptionally heartfelt message from his former colleague.
Guthrie, aged 53, began the January 13 broadcast with these words: “You’ve taken your seat here so many times before, but today feels different. Let’s embark on this journey; it promises to be a truly remarkable experience.
In the interim, Kotb, who parted ways with Today on January 10 following almost 17 years, had penned a heartfelt note intended for broadcast by Melvin.
On your initial day, I’d like to express my sentiments. I’m incredibly pleased with you, and I thought it was essential to share this sentiment. You see, you are about to demonstrate remarkable abilities, which makes me confident you will excel.
