In the forthcoming chapters of the Ultimate Universe, we’ll witness the encounter between the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. These two characters have often straddled the line between villainy and heroism in Marvel’s Avengers and X-Men comics. They’ve been pivotal figures in many of Marvel’s major storylines and crossovers. As Marvel expands its Ultimate Universe, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are next on the roster. However, unlike their potential alliance or even membership with the Ultimates, these siblings seem to be at odds with the heroes in the upcoming issues of Ultimates.
Marvel has unveiled the lineup for July’s Ultimate series, featuring issue #14 of Ultimates. The cover depicts Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in a foreboding background, with Captain America and Hawkeye engaged in combat. According to the brief synopsis, the Ultimates are set to attack a fortress belonging to the Hellfire Club; however, a treacherous duo of twins adds an unexpected twist. Previous installments have introduced characters like Luke Cage and the Guardians of the Galaxy, aligning with this development. Notably, issue #13 hints at Tony Stark (Iron Lad) working on Ultimates 3.0, potentially indicating the recruitment of additional heroes to aid them in their mission to prevent the Maker’s return.
In my perspective, the image of Captain America, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver evokes a sense of nostalgia towards Cap’s original team, the Kooky Quartet. During this time, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes saw me following a leaderless Captain, sans the powerhouses like Iron Man, Thor, and Giant-Man. As for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, their path in the Ultimate Universe seems to be echoing that of Earth-616, where they initially appeared as adversaries before eventually becoming Avengers.

It’s intriguing to find out if Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver acquired their abilities through means other than being mutants, given Marvel has revised their origin stories several times, most recently to match their portrayals in the Marvel Universe movies. While they were initially mutants and Magneto’s offspring, this is no longer accurate. Nevertheless, Scarlet Witch continues to view Magneto as a paternal figure.
Readers have been left heartbroken by the revelation of the fates of Magneto, Charles Xavier, and Jean Grey from this week’s issue #4 of Ultimate Wolverine. Now deceased, both Xavier and Magneto find their consciousnesses being used in a macabre manner. Xavier’s brain is employed to control a comatose Jean Grey within the Eurasian Republic’s Cerebellum. As a consequence, Jean serves as a tool to keep the Winter Soldier (Wolverine) in line.
In the latest development, Marvel is launching a comic series titled “Ultimate X-Men”. However, some crucial X-Men characters are already present or mentioned in other titles. Characters like Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Mystique, Gambit, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Magik, Omega Red, and Jean Grey have been featured in “Ultimate Wolverine”, while Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are expected to make an appearance in “Ultimates”.
