In a chat with Vanity Fair, Scarlett Johansson – known for her role as a Marvel superstar – shared an interesting tidbit about the making of 2012’s “The Avengers”. During filming, the cast had their doubts about whether the movie would succeed, as they weren’t sure how Marvel would manage to blend all the characters together. However, Johansson mentioned that while directors Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige seemed confident in their strategy, this wasn’t immediately clear to the actors. It was only when Johansson saw the iconic circle shot that she began to grasp the vision.
In the creation of the original Avengers, none of us could foresee the movie’s potential. Assembling all those characters together initially seemed like a chaotic mix, to be frank. Even on set, it felt surreal because we all looked unconventionally wild, leading to questions such as “What are we doing?” It’s likely that Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon were certain it would succeed, but the cast was putting their faith in Joss and Kevin blindly.
Later on, Johansson talked about the circular shot that showed the entire Avengers team. She recalled, “There’s a scene where we’re all in front of Grand Central and you see a 360-degree view of all the characters together. It was that moment when we all thought, ‘I think this might just work.’ It felt powerful… When we watched it back, it looked really impressive, but much of it didn’t feel very impressive while we were filming it.
The movie ‘The Avengers’ signified the conclusion of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase One, fulfilling the objective hinted at in the post-credits scene of ‘Iron Man’. It swiftly rose to become one of the highest-grossing films ever made. The overwhelmingly favorable critic reviews played a significant role in its global earnings of approximately $1.5 billion. This unprecedented success significantly contributed to the MCU’s rise as the cultural powerhouse it is recognized as today.
The Marvel Cinematographic Universe (MCU) has placed The Avengers franchise at the top spot. After the initial 2012 movie, a total of four Avengers films were produced during the Infinity Saga, each earning tremendous success. Notably, both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” surpassed $2 billion in global box office sales each. The upcoming Avengers film is titled “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to premiere the following summer.
Reflecting on the past, it’s amusing to consider that the success of The Avengers was once a considerable gamble. At the time, no one had ventured into a shared cinematic universe like this, and when The Avengers hit theaters, many of its characters were far from being widely recognized. Although the Iron Man films had proven to be box office sensations, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger had more modest earnings. There was no certainty that audiences would embrace The Avengers as eagerly as they did, and if the movie didn’t resonate as intended, the Marvel Cinematic Universe might not have gotten off the ground.
It’s clear why Johansson and her fellow actors might have hesitated during filming – it’s much like the cast of Star Wars experienced while making their movie. When a genre production aims for such a significant departure from the norm, uncertainty is inevitable. After all, there had been many successful superhero films preceding The Avengers, but Feige’s vision was something unique. Thankfully, The Avengers managed to meet all expectations, and Johansson’s concerns ultimately proved unfounded.
