As a mother to a pre-teen, Scarlett Johansson faces significant responsibilities, along with some unfamiliar and potentially embarrassing discussion points.
In a candid moment, the actress who plays The Avengers’ character openly discussed her unique experiences as a mother to Rose Dorothy Dauriac, aged 10, her daughter with ex-partner Romain Dauriac. She also offered advice on navigating relationships and handling crushes.
Scarlett mentioned during her guest hosting on Today, January 29, that she recently discussed the concept of ‘ghosting’ with her 10-year-old daughter. This was due to a situation involving a boy who had feelings for her daughter, but she no longer reciprocated them. Consequently, she simply stopped communicating with him, leaving him feeling upset.
The 40-year-old went on to explain, “I shared with her my idea of ‘ghosting’. It leaves the other person feeling extremely low and sets them on a downward emotional spiral. This is something I can say because I’m the type of person who does the ghosting. I dislike confrontations intensely.
Scarlett, who is likewise a mother to 3-year-old Cosmo with her spouse Colin Jost, also mentioned that she has experienced the opposite end of a silent breakup, having been “left on read” or “ghosted” herself.
She explained that the most difficult aspect of getting dumped is the clarity it provides, whereas being “ghosted” leaves one in limbo. On the contrary, when someone breaks up with you directly, whether face-to-face or over a phone call, you have some understanding and can begin processing the situation. However, being ghosted means no closure, leaving you questioning if there was something you did wrong.
Scarlett added, “It haunts you for years.”
The actress who portrayed Black Widow started co-hosting Today from January 21st, taking over from Hoda Kotb who left earlier this month, additionally imparted another valuable piece of advice to Rose during their time together.
Scarlett shared an instance where her daughter experienced the same dilemma as the viewer who felt overlooked when not invited to a friend’s group trip, when Jenna Bush Hager inquired about advice on this matter.
Scarlett put it this way: “If you weren’t included in the invitation, it simply means that you were not invited.” I also tell my daughter, ‘People have their personal space and preferences. At times, friends might choose to spend time with others. That doesn’t imply they don’t care for you.’
