Over eighteen years since they last worked on it, the Wayans brothers are coming back to scare moviegoers with their unique blend of humor and horror. The much-anticipated sixth film in the Scary Movie series is set for release on June 12, 2026, as Keenen Ivory, Shawn, and Marlon Wayans join forces once more to write and produce this project. This news signifies a triumphant return for these comedy trailblazers who transformed the parody genre with their 2000 horror spoof.
The franchise is back to where it started as Miramax takes over, with Paramount Pictures managing global distribution. The initial movie, a humorous take on famous slasher flicks such as Scream, became a trailblazing triumph, earning an impressive $42.5 million in its opening weekend—breaking records for both R-rated horror movies and films directed by Black filmmakers—and eventually raking in a whopping $278 million worldwide.
In a recent interview on the show “Club Shay Shay”, Marlon Wayans talked about the intricate past of the franchise, explaining how Harvey Weinstein’s unfavorable deal with Miramax resulted in the family losing ownership of the series following “Scary Movie 2″.
Marlon made it clear that imitating the Wayans’ style isn’t easy. He said, ‘You won’t find our kind of humor anywhere else.’ After all, there are 200 years of comedy within the family, consisting of Marlon, Shawn, Keenen, Damon, and Kim. It’s not as simple as swapping anyone in.
Initially hinted during CinemaCon, the reunion project was later formally announced. The teaming up for the scriptwriting involves the brothers along with Rick Alvarez. In this endeavor, all four of them will function as producers.
Jonathan Glickman, CEO of Miramax, expresses excitement about teaming up Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers once more, as they were the masterminds behind the popular franchise. He believes now is an ideal moment to revive the show for a cinematic comeback.
The Wayans brothers are thrilled to join the latest Scary Movie production and collaborate once more. This franchise, which we launched over two decades ago, brings back fond memories of audiences roaring with laughter in movie theaters. We eagerly anticipate recreating those laughs, and working with Jonathan Glickman and his Miramax team to bring this humor back to the big screen where it rightfully belongs. This is essentially a double reunion for us.
Excitedly announcing on Instagram, Marlon shared, “We’re making a comeback! After almost 20 years, the Wayans brothers are eager to fulfill their fans’ requests and revive the SCARY MOVIE series once more. Can’t wait to create more laughs on the big screen!
I’m absolutely thrilled! The production for the new Scary Movie is set to kick off this year, and the creative minds behind it are determined to bring back the wild, hilarious spirit that made the originals standout comedies. If you haven’t already, catch up on the previous Scary Movies streaming now on Paramount+!
