After over a decade since the initial release of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”, fans’ wishes finally came true when Netflix’s “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” anime was launched in 2023, continuing the character’s storyline. The series was created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the original creator of Scott Pilgrim, and BenDavid Grabinski, and it brought back most of the original cast members. However, Netflix chose not to produce additional episodes of the show following that one season. Michael Cera, who played Scott in the movie and voiced him in “Takes Off”, believes his time with the character has now concluded, as he and the rest of the cast have grown too old to portray the young character any longer. As fans eagerly await news about Scott Pilgrim’s potential future, they can catch Cera in the movie “Sacramento,” which is set to hit theaters on April 11th.
Cera clarified to ComicBook about his role that continuing the journey no longer seemed feasible due to our advanced age. Over time, everyone grew older. Despite this, I enjoyed reprising my character and returning to the world. The cartoon provided an excellent opportunity for us all to reunite, and I was delighted to participate. Unfortunately, it appears they’ve decided not to produce more episodes, either because it was cancelled or not renewed. Essentially, they’re not funding us to make more.
It’s important to clarify that even though Netflix didn’t renew the series, it doesn’t necessarily mean that “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” was cancelled. Instead, this implies that there were no further plans for an extended run of the show’s universe. However, creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and Ben David Grabinski have made it clear that the series was intended to be a standalone production, allowing them to tell the complete story they envisioned.
Due to the tremendous success of “Takes Off” and its anime style captivating both longtime fans and new viewers alike, there’s a chance that we haven’t yet explored the end of this universe. However, if more is produced, it might deviate from what fans typically anticipate.
Meanwhile, I find myself observing Michael Cera in Sacramento, a city that’s been characterized as, “After the passing of his father, the energetic and free-spirited Rickey (Michael Angarano) persuades his longtime friend Glenn (Michael Cera) to embark on an unexpected road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Disgruntled by Rickey’s Peter Pan-like attitude, Glenn is motivated by his pregnant wife Rosie (Kristen Stewart) to seize this opportunity for reconnection. Nestled in the weathered seats of Glenn’s vintage college convertible, these two friends navigate their apprehensive lives, addressing past regrets and pondering their uncertain futures.
The film titled “Sacramento” will be released in theaters on April 11th. Keep an eye out for potential news regarding Scott Pilgrim’s future.
