As a long-time movie enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of various film franchises, I find myself intrigued by the latest development in the Scream saga. The addition of Mckenna Grace to the cast of Scream 7 is an exciting move, considering her impressive resume in horror films. From Ghostbusters to The Conjuring Universe, she has certainly made a name for herself as a scream queen in the making.
Movie title “Scream 7” has welcomed actress Mckenna Grace to its ensemble. Known for her roles in the revamped “Ghostbusters” series (specifically, “Afterlife” and “Frozen Empire”), as well as portraying a young Carol Danvers in Marvel’s “Captain Marvel”, it remains undisclosed which character Mckenna Grace will portray in the upcoming slasher film parody. Speculation among fans is rife regarding whether she might unveil herself as Ghostface or one of the killers, similar to previous casting choices in the Scream series. This new role would further expand Mckenna Grace’s horror movie portfolio, which already boasts films like “Ghostbusters”, “The Conjuring” Universe release “Annabelle Comes Home”, the remake and sequel of “The Bad Seed”, James Wan’s “Malignant”, Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House”, and many more.
Grace becomes part of the official lineup, which features returning lead actress Neve Campbell reprising her role as Sidney Prescott once more.
In its production journey, Scream VII was initially planned as a sequel to Scream VI, serving as the second chapter in a revamped storyline that follows Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), who is the illegitimate daughter of the original Ghostface, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). After escaping another Ghostface uprising in Woodsboro during Scream V, Sam and her sister Tara relocated to New York City with their surviving friends (the “Core Four”) for Tara’s education. However, the Carpenter sisters found themselves under attack once more, this time by the family of one of the killers they vanquished in Scream V; in a dramatic turn, they took control, acknowledging their own dark heritage and taking down a family trio of Ghostface killers in a gruesome, bloody confrontation. The ending of Scream VI hinted at Sam potentially succumbing to her own murderous instincts, having dispatched two sets of killers under the guidance of her father’s ghost.
Behind the scenes, Melissa Barrera was let go from Scream 7 due to her controversial remarks about the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This decision led to Radio Silence, the directors of Scream 6, along with Barrera’s fellow cast member Jenna Ortega, to leave the project as well. As a result, Scream 7 has been reimagined, refocusing on Neve Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott. Although Campbell made a brief appearance in Scream 5, she decided not to participate in Scream VI, with her character Sidney choosing to prioritize her new family rather than traveling to NYC.
In “Scream 7”, there’s a blend of fresh faces like Isabel May from “1883” who plays Sidney’s daughter, while whispers suggest that Courtney Cox might reappear as Gale Rivers, and Patrick Dempsey could potentially reprise his role from “Scream 3” as Sidney’s husband, now a detective named Mark Kincaid.
Melissa Barrera hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Sam Carpenter returning, given the right circumstances: “I’ve found that ‘never say never,’ but a lot needs to change for Sam to reappear,” Barrera stated earlier this year. “For now, let’s move forward, turn the page, and then we’ll see what the future brings.
Scream 7 is in development.
