Scream 7 Confirms Another Franchise Star Is Returning

As a devoted fan of the Scream franchise, I must say that the announcement of Mason Gooding’s return for Scream 7 fills me with both excitement and anticipation. The young actor has proven his mettle as Chad Meeks-Martin, standing toe-to-toe with Ghostface in a thrilling cat-and-mouse game.

It’s been confirmed that at least one member from the original four will reappear in “Scream 7”. As per recent news from Variety, Mason Gooding is set to reprise his role as Chad Meeks-Martin, facing off against Ghostface again. Given the events of both “Scream” and “Scream VI”, it’s possible that he might suffer a few stabs. The upcoming film will see the return of original cast member Neve Campbell as Sydney Prescott, with Courteney Cox in discussions to reprise her role as Gale Weathers. However, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, Gooding’s previous co-stars, won’t be appearing in the new movie.

It’s not clear if Jasmin Savoy Brown will reprise her role as Chad’s sister Mindy Meeks-Martin in Scream 7, especially with Gooding joining the cast. If Gooding returns and she doesn’t, it would be somewhat unexpected. Each Scream film has its Randy, and Brown has admirably filled that role for two movies now. Similarly, Kirby Reed (played by Hayden Panettiere) from Scream 4 was a great fit for the role. Since Panettiere came out of retirement for Scream VI and her character’s inclusion felt natural, it would seem like a missed opportunity if she is not part of the seventh installment.

The seventh “Scream” film has faced the most challenges in wrapping up the series compared to its predecessors, a fact that speaks volumes given the script leak for “Scream 2” and the request for less violence in “Scream 3” following the Columbine tragedy. The departure of Barrera and Ortega was significant setbacks, but the final scene of “Scream 6” seems to offer a fitting end to their storylines.

Additionally, the concern arose about potentially parting ways with the talented director duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Thankfully, Kevin Williamson agreed to take over directing duties for the movie (his second since 1999’s “Teaching Mrs. Tingle”), having previously written classics such as “Scream” (1996), “Scream 2,” and “Scream 4.

Following her roles in the “Yellowstone” spin-offs titled “1883” and “1923”, Isabel May has been cast as Sidney Prescott’s eldest daughter, who is speculated to be named Tatum, similar to Rose McGowan’s character in the initial film. In the upcoming “Scream 7”, we will also see McKenna Grace, known for her roles in “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, as well as Celeste O’Connor, who starred alongside her in both films. Additionally, Asa Germann from “Gen V” and Sam Rechner from “The Fabelmans” are also expected to make appearances.

The situation for Scream 7 is coming together nicely, much to the delight of fans who were beginning to fear it might never happen. Earlier, the film’s production seemed bleak after Christopher Landon, who had taken over from Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, left as director shortly after being appointed. The controversy surrounding Spyglass’ dismissal of Barrera continues to be a topic of discussion, but the studio eventually reconciled with Campbell.

We’re currently looking at a wait of slightly more than a year before the movie premieres in cinemas. The question is whether it can maintain the harmony between seasoned actors and fresh talents, as successfully achieved in the 2022 version of Scream and its upcoming sequel, Scream VI. Or will it struggle under the burden of its history and the expectation to not only meet the standards set by those two films, but also the original ones?

Scream 7 is currently scheduled for release on February 27, 2026.
