2022’s Scream and Scream VI, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, brought a fresh, invigorating spin to the Scream series, both creatively and financially. However, it appears that 2026’s Scream 7 is taking a different path. Not a complete departure, but a new direction. The man who co-created the franchise, Kevin Williamson, who previously directed only one film (Teaching Mrs. Tingle in 1999), is at the helm of this upcoming project. However, it’s unclear what will happen to the leads from Scream (2022) and Scream VI, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. Instead, the film is expected to be led by long-time franchise actors Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox.
In August of 2023, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett (also known as Radio Silence) decided not to participate in a seventh installment. Subsequently, Barrera was terminated under controversy following her pro-Palestine remarks on social media. Soon after, Ortega chose to leave due to scheduling clashes with the second season of Netflix’s hit series Wednesday. Although speculation about the actual reasons for Barrera and Ortega’s departure circulated online, their characters Sam and Tara Carpenter, respectively, will not appear in Williamson’s upcoming movie. To achieve true success, however, Scream 7 must tackle the obvious issue that has arisen.
Where Did Scream VI Leave Sam and Tara Carpenter?
In the sequel to the last two Scream movies, it would feel very odd if the main characters from those films were completely overlooked or ignored. This could be a noticeable mistake considering that two new characters introduced alongside them will appear in Scream 7. It’s not unheard of for a Scream film to address a character’s absence with a quick line, like how Sidney’s absence was addressed in Scream 4.
As far as Scream 7 goes, it should be alright if they acknowledge the sisters in some way. In fact, Scream VI provided a natural farewell for Sam and Tara. Sam decided to leave her bloodthirsty past behind and move on (which is why she discarded the Ghostface mask), while Tara developed more autonomy and a stronger survivor’s instinct. It might be through Tara that Scream 7 could explain the sisters’ disappearance. One of the original characters coming back to the series is Mason Gooding, who by the end of Scream VI was developing a relationship with Tara. Even if they’re not together when the events of the seventh movie occur, he’ll probably at least be informed about what she and her sister are doing.
Who Is Coming Back for Scream 7?
In Scream 7, it’s none other than Neve Campbell’s character Sidney Prescott who takes center stage, having missed out on Scream VI due to contract issues. This time around, viewers will get a chance to know more about her family too. Isabel May (from 1883) has been cast as Sidney’s daughter, while Joel McHale steps into the role of her husband, Mark. Interestingly, this Mark is not the same one from Scream 3, a fact that took many fans by surprise since they were anticipating Patrick Dempsey to return to his role as well.
It’s been confirmed that characters from “Scream 3” and the original “Scream” will join the cast. Specifically, Scott Foley, who played the killer in “Scream 3”, and Matthew Lillard from the first “Scream”, are set to appear. However, it remains to be seen if they’ll reprise their roles as Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard), respectively.
In the realm of established characters, it’s not just Campbell, Cox, Gooding, Lillard, and Foley who stand solo; Jasmin Savoy Brown is set to reprise her role as Randy’s sister, Mindy Meeks-Martin. Regarding the character Randy, it’s unfortunate that Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed won’t be part of the story this time. However, there are numerous fresh faces joining the cast, including Ethan Embry from “Sweet Home Alabama”, Mckenna Grace known for “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, Celeste O’Connor from “Madame Web”, Mark Consuelos famous for “Riverdale”, and Anna Camp hailing from “Pitch Perfect”. Each of them will be making their debut in the Scream movie, though their roles remain undisclosed.
To put it simply, the upcoming movie “Scream 7” is taking an intriguing direction, blending old and new elements even more than the 2022 “Scream”. Regrettably, Barrera and Ortega won’t be part of this sequel. However, the return of Williamson to the series generates much anticipation. If this film indeed serves as the final chapter in the franchise, which seems plausible given its role as a conclusion to past events, it could make for a fitting finale. It’s crucial that it provides closure for its beloved characters without leaving too many unanswered questions.
