As far as pre-production processes go, Scream 7 undoubtedly hasn’t had the most plain-sailing one.
2023 ended on quite a tumultuous note for this movie I’m eagerly anticipating. It came as a surprise when Melissa Barrera was no longer part of the cast following her Instagram posts concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict. Adding to the shock, Jenna Ortega decided not to continue with the horror series, and director Christopher Landon stepped away from the project after describing it as a “dream job that transformed into a nightmare”.
The movie eventually found its footing again, particularly when it was disclosed that Neve Campbell would reprise her role as the beloved final girl Sidney Prescott. This development made Campbell express gratitude for being brought back in a considerate manner, following the controversy surrounding her absence in the previous edition.
It was also confirmed that the film had found a new director in franchise veteran Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first four films in the franchise but whose only previous directing credit is the largely forgotten 1999 film Teaching Mrs Tingle.
Although these new additions are in place, it remains uncertain how the series will handle the exit of two of its prominent figures. With Sam (Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Ortega) solidifying their roles as the future pillars by Scream VI, what’s the strategy for the upcoming movie?

Who will be in the Scream 7 cast?
It’s now been confirmed that Neve Campbell will be returning to lead the new film as her iconic character Sidney Prescott, having sat out the previous entry as the result of a pay dispute.
She shared the exciting news on her Instagram, stating, “I can’t contain my excitement to share this news! The return of Sidney Prescott is happening!!! Playing Sidney in the Scream films has been a thrilling and esteemed experience every time.
I’ve always cherished these movies and the impact they’ve had on me. I’m overjoyed to share that I’ve been invited, with great respect, to reintroduce Sidney on the big screen, and I’m absolutely ecstatic about it!
Back in 2024, whispers circulated about me potentially stepping back into the shoes of Gale Weathers, a character I’ve played for years as a news reporter. However, an official statement confirming this exciting rumor is yet to be made public. Fingers crossed!
Contrary to the survival of all the main Scream cast members from the latest movie, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega won’t be returning for Scream VII.
Barrera was dropped from the film following her Instagram posts about the Israel-Hamas war.
In one Instagram post, Barrera wrote: “Western media only shows the [Israeli] side. Why do they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself,” adding: “We don’t need more hate. No Islamophobia. No Anti-semitism.”
Barrera’s other posts also contained assertions likening the conditions in Gaza to those of a concentration camp at present.
A representative from Spyglass, the company responsible for the Scream series, made a statement to Variety: “Spyglass firmly stands against antisemitism and any form of hate incitement. This includes misrepresentations of genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortions of the Holocaust, or any speech that blatantly exceeds the boundaries into hateful discourse.

On the following day, it became official that Jenna Ortega wouldn’t rejoin the horror series again because of her busy filming schedule for Wednesday’s second season.
According to Variety’s reports, Ortega’s departure had been planned well ahead of Barrera’s dismissal, even before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
It had been anticipated that Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown would continue playing their respective characters in Scream 7 (Scream VII).
Additionally, we might get to explore more about FBI agent Kirby Reed, the beloved character played by Hayden Panettiere, who came perilously close to meeting her end in the most recent episode.
Of course, no Scream movie would be complete without Roger L Jackson as the sinister voice of Ghostface, so expect to hear him down the other end of the phone in any future films.
In the latest Scream movie, there was a fleeting mention of Matthew Lillard’s character, Stu Macher – one of the initial killers – that hinted at his potential survival (a theory that fans have long pondered over).
During questioning about the concept, co-director Gillett informed Entertainment Tonight: “Anything could happen… We reintroduced Billy as a figment of someone’s imagination.
In fact, actor Skeet Ulrich portrayed a character in both the 2022 version of Scream and Scream VI. This character was a creation of Sam Carpenter’s imagination, urging her to embrace her innate capacity for violence, representing his daughter.
Scream 7 plot theories
At this point, we’re not sure what the upcoming sequel will bring, but Neve Campbell has shared that one reason she decided to return was due to a stronger emphasis on her character, Sidney Prescott.
She shared with Entertainment Tonight that we will be sticking with Sidney’s project. The idea was presented to me, and it’s what enticed me to get involved.
In Scream VI, the story delves into Sam Carpenter’s distressed psyche, focusing on the unsettling compulsion she experiences, drawing her towards dressing up as Ghostface and emulating her father’s killing spree from years past.
At the climactic showdown, I discard a Ghostface mask – the one I had used in my confrontation with Detective Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney) – implying that perhaps I am letting go of those terrifying notions.
But should she remove her mask, it might instigate another sinister character to assume the role – consequently leading to a new installment within the series.
