The “Scream” movie series, now encompassing six films and set for a seventh, brings back the central character Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, who took a break after a salary disagreement with Spyglass Media Group during the sixth installment. In her absence, Sam Carpenter, portrayed by Melissa Barrera, emerged as the lead character from the fifth movie released in 2022. However, certain events behind the scenes have caused controversy among fans, leading to Barrera’s exit following the announcement of the seventh film, with rising star Jenna Ortega also choosing to leave. With so many changes occurring, where will the franchise head next? As stated by Guy Busick, the writer of the seventh installment, it all points back to Sidney Prescott.
In an interview with ComicBook to publicize Final Destination Bloodlines, which he co-wrote, Busick shared his rationale for why the seventh Scream film required Sidney (Campbell) to return, despite Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers stating in the sixth movie that “She deserves her happy ending.” The writer hinted, “I don’t want to reveal the reason [Scream 7] became a Sidney-focused film because there’s an intriguing explanation.” Later, he disclosed that they crafted a narrative that was fitting for the character.
There’s a particular motivation behind Sidney’s presence in this film. We figured it out and we were satisfied once we did. We explained it to Neve Campbell, who replied, “Ah, I understand now.” I initially presented the idea to Kevin Williamson, who also understood it, and then I pitched it to the studio. The story for Scream 5 and 6 was developed with my co-writer, James Vanderbilt.
Scream 7 Had To Start From Scratch After the Exits of Melissa Barrera & Jenna Ortega
Initially, it was expected that Scream 7 would continue the storyline involving Barrera and Ortega. However, when they left the project, the script had to be reworked significantly, as Guy Busick explained, “It was an entirely different thing.” This meant starting from scratch, which he found disappointing. It appears that earlier plans for Scream 7 may have included a trilogy conclusion with these particular characters.
We were thrilled with the film’s content and wished for another installment featuring our beloved “Core Four” characters. The audience adores these characters as much as we do, since we conceived them ourselves. In a hypothetical world, I’d be delighted to witness their ongoing adventures in some form. Regrettably, we couldn’t transfer elements from the previous story. It felt like we had to accept what fate handed us. We’ve always been eager to produce a film centered around Sidney, and now it’s a matter of figuring out why and how at this particular moment.
The Core Four isn’t entirely broken up; instead, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown are reprising their roles as the Meeks-Martin twins, who were significant in the fifth and sixth films. Busick revealed that it was Vanderbilt who conceived the idea to incorporate these characters into the new narrative in a way that fits well. It seems that the reasoning behind this is connected to Gale (Cox), as she serves as a sort of “connective tissue” for those characters due to her interactions with them, particularly in the sixth film installment.
I think it was James who originated the idea, and I want to acknowledge him properly. It just seemed fitting for them to appear in this film without giving away any plot details, but let me hint that it’s via Gale. She plays a crucial role in movies 5 and 6, and she’s also present here. New York played a significant role, connecting the four characters, and there’s a specific explanation for why these two characters end up in this town where the story unfolds.
Scream 7 hits screens on Feb. 27, 2026.
