Matthew Lillard is in discussions to become part of the cast for the upcoming “Carrie” remake on Amazon Prime Video. This new version of Stephen King’s classic novel will take the form of a series rather than a movie, which raises some questions about the project. It appears that Lillard, with his extensive background in horror films and upcoming return to the “Scream” franchise, could be an excellent choice for this adaptation. However, it remains unclear which role Lillard might play in the series, as the expanded storyline may introduce new characters. This information was reported by Deadline on Thursday.
In the series “Carrie,” produced by Prime Video, Mike Flanagan takes on the roles of showrunner and writer. Summer H. Howell portrays the lead character Carrie, while Siena Agudong steps into the role of Sue Snell, who is Carrie’s closest friend in the narrative. As of now, Lillard is speculated to join the cast, although his participation has not been officially confirmed yet. Given the original novel by King, it appears that Lillard may be cast as the high school principal, as the story tends to have fewer adult male characters.
In simpler terms, there’s a possibility that the main character, similar to Lillard, might have a more significant role due to increased screen time. However, it’s important to note that “Carrie” is not a lengthy novel; its original version had only 199 pages. Previous film adaptations have generally stayed true to the book. The story may need some expansion to fit a series or could be adapted more meticulously. Alternatively, the series might continue past the book’s ending, like the 2002 adaptation tried to do.
Damon Lindelof has just finished collaborating with Mike Flanagan on another adaptation of a Stephen King novel – “The Life of Chuck,” set for release in the U.S. on June 6th. This film garnered favorable reviews after its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last year, even winning the People’s Choice Award there. Flanagan has been successful in adapting several works by Stephen King in recent years, including “Doctor Sleep” and “Gerald’s Game.” Additionally, he has had success with other horror projects that appear to draw inspiration from King’s writing style.
As of now, the Carrie series is still in its initial phases with no definite release date announced yet. Lillard’s participation hasn’t been verified as of now, making Howell and Agudong the only officially confirmed cast members so far. Currently, you can stream both the 1976 and 2013 film adaptations of Carrie on Max, while Stephen King’s novel is accessible in print, digital, and audiobook formats.
