SDCC 2024: Chris Hemsworth on His Uncertain MCU Future: "Waiting for the Phone Call…"

As a huge fan of Chris Hemsworth and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can’t contain my excitement as I eagerly anticipate his upcoming role in “Transformers One” as Optimus Prime! The thought of seeing him embody this iconic character during his younger years is truly thrilling.

Chris Hemsworth is set to make his mark on the cinematic landscape this autumn with “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” where he assumes the role of Optimus Prime and portrays him during his formative years prior to the devastating War for Cybertron. During an interview with ComicBook at the premiere of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (following a stunning Hall H panel), Hemsworth discussed his part in the movie, as well as the possibility of rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In particular, we questioned Hemsworth about the likelihood of our next encounter being for “Thor: Love and Thunder” or “Avengers: The New Age.”

“Wow!” Hemsworth expressed, happily adding, “I’ve enjoyed every moment being part of the Marvel Universe. If there are more projects in store, I’m eagerly anticipating them. No definite plans as of now. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed and staying hopeful for that call and update.”

Chris Hemsworth last portrayed Thor in “Thor: Love and Thunder,” released in 2022 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Contrary to its predecessor, this installment didn’t garner the same level of positive reception. However, Marvel Studios has previously hinted at the production of “Avengers 5” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” As a result, it remains uncertain when Thor will reappear.

Previously, it had been mentioned that Marvel Studios was pondering a fifth Thor movie. However, Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, was not expected to be involved in the project according to earlier reports. Waititi himself has stated he wouldn’t be coming back, while Hemsworth expressed his desire to explore new directions for the character with fresh talent at the helm.

Infinity War and Endgame, Hemsworth enjoyed exploring drastic changes with Thor which kept both himself and the audience engaged. However, if invited back, he believed it would require a significant shift in tone for his own sake and to avoid becoming too complacent.

As a longtime fan of Marvel movies and comic books, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be attending San Diego Comic-Con this year! And guess what? Marvel Studios has just announced that their much-anticipated Hall H panel is set for this Saturday, July 27. I can hardly contain my excitement as I’ve been counting down the days for this very moment. It’s going to be an unforgettable experience, and I’ll be there live at 6 PM PT/9 PM ET to soak up all the latest Marvel Studios news and surprises. Bring it on, SDCC!
