SDCC 2024: David Harbour Says Thunderbolts* “Fundamentally Changes” the Marvel Cinematic Universe

As a die-hard Marvel fan, I am beyond excited for the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie! The way Marvel Studios has been subtly building up to this team over the years is truly masterful storytelling. From Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine recruiting John Walker and Yelena Belova, to David Harbour’s recent “bomb drop” tease, there’s a sense of anticipation that’s palpable in the air.

The appearance of “Thunderbolts” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is anticipated to bring about significant changes, though details on how this will transpire are being kept under wraps. For some time now, Marvel Studios has been subtly preparing for this team-up, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine emerging in productions such as “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Black Widow,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” In these projects, Val has been both gathering personnel and showcasing her influence. So far, she has identified John Walker (Wyatt Russell) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). It’s uncertain what Valentina is assembling a team for, but as David Harbour hinted during his role as an “Thunderbolts” ensemble member, it promises to be a major undertaking.

In an earlier conversation with ComicBook, Harbour playfully hinted, “We’ll be introducing something explosive into the universe that will make for an exhilarating finale as we bring this phase to a close.”

David Harbour Expands on “Bomb Drop” Tease in Thunderbolts*

Something big is coming for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s assembly of anti-heroes.

At San Diego Comic-Con, David Harbour from the Marvel Cinematic Universe show “Thunderbolts” spoke with ComicBook. During this conversation, he was probed to provide more details about the cryptic hint he had previously dropped regarding his upcoming MCU project.

As a seasoned writer with years of experience under my belt, I can relate to Harbour’s statement on encountering something unfamiliar that alters the direction of a story’s development. It’s an exhilarating and nerve-wracking experience that keeps us on our toes, pushing us to explore new creative territories. The unknown element adds depth and intrigue, challenging us to reconsider established narratives and forge new paths. And when this happens, the phone calls from readers and fans are a welcome reminder of the power of storytelling and the joy it brings to others.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that the enigma surrounding much of “Thunderbolts*” seems closely connected to Lewis Pullman’s character, Bob. You might think this connection could be anything, but it’s intriguing how it ties back in.

In simpler terms, Sentry might significantly alter the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s direction just by being present. If Harbour implies that Sentry is a mystery to the Thunderbolts, it could mean that he is considered a major threat right away.

Thunderbolts* hits theaters on May 2nd, 2025.
